Result of Service

Through these services the Initiative will be able to engage a broad range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, asset managers, insurers, and multi-lateral development banks and agencies – in a constructive dialogue about the nexus between responsible banking and the financial sector. The services will also help promote the Collective Commitment to Climate Action as the primary and most ambitious global banking sector initiative supporting the transition to a net zero economy by 2050, in the run up to COP 26 in November 2021. The services will help highlight the ENCORE tool and biodiversity module to financial institutions worldwide, including target countries.

Duties and Responsibilities

Located within the UN Environment Division of Economy, the Resources & Markets Branch (UNEP-RMB) seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with the partnership and integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic partnership between UN Environment and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with 350+ financial institutions as well as a range of partners and organizations, to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance.

UNEP FI has a core banking team, hosting and engaging the 200+ banking signatories of the Principles for Responsible Banking in generating sustainable finance pathways, and the 38 Signatories of the Collective Commitment to Climate Action, the most ambitious global banking sector initiative supporting the transition to a net zero economy by 2050.

Nature & Ecosystems is a thematic workstream, which engages financial institutions across the banking, insurance and investment industries to develop innovative insight and tools to address biodiversity loss, incorporate natural capital into address deforestation, sustainable land use and related issues into financial decision making (SDG 14, Life Below Water and SDG15, Life on Land).

Communications, marketing, engagement, website development and events are important to help generate awareness, visibility and knowledge, identify and share best market practice and engage financial institutions in actioning UNEP FI’s initiatives.

UNEP FI needs a consultant to work on all their communications requirements, including digital, web based, paper and currently does not have the relavent professional expertise internally to carry out the stated tasks as shown below.

Objectives, output expectations and performance indicators

In line with the work programme delivered during the UNEP FI Annual General Meetings and under the direct supervision of Jessica Smith, UNEP FI Nature & Ecosystems Lead, in close cooperation with the Interim UNEP FI Banking Lead and the Banking & Nature Communications Lead, the consultant will carry out the following project tasks as shown below in 4.

The consultant will Support UNEP FI’s outreach and communications to the Principles for Responsible Banking membership and the wider finance industry via online communications, social media, email campaigns, press relations, etc.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

The consultant will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Communications work including key campaigns in 2021.

• Media & Press

o Assist with outreach to media on key projects and events via all channels

o Assist Comms lead in liaising with UNEP head office press team on key launches

o Help drafting press releases and media advisory notes

o Maintain list of press contacts

• Social Media & Website

o Update and assist management content on the UNEP FI website and NCFA website

o Assist with the management of social media channels in coordination with communications colleagues

o Assist with production of web and social media analysis

o Write content for all channels on sustainable finance topics (social media, articles, website, newsletters, speeches, video scripts, etc)

o Liaise with the in-house design team for visual identity, social media assets and templates

o Use online tools to create basic videos for social media

• Members & Partner channels

o Help building communications packs for Principles for Responsible Banking and Collective Commitment to Climate Action members on key launches

o Help maintain connection with banking comms member group, including admin tasks, responding to comms enquiries and organizing regular meetings

o Webinars & Events

o Assist in prepping speakers for webinars and events, including speech writing and slide creation as required.

o Monitor the sustainable finance and COP 26 event landscape, seeking key opportunities to promote the Principles for Responsible Banking and UNEP FI’s Nature projects.

Outputs and Deliverables:

• Assist on the communications campaigns for key deliverables in 2021, including:

o Maintaining continuous communications on the theme of Banking, Sustainable Finance with a focus on Finance for Nature.

o Civil Society Advisory Board (March)

o Collective Commitment to Climate Action Principles (March)

o Release of Guidance for Biodiversity Targets, Financial Inclusion, Assurance providers (April)

o Launch of the ENCORE biodiversity module in (April)

o Highlighting ENCORE at the CBD COP 15 (May)

o Collective Commitment to Climate Action towards Net Zero (May & November)

o Impact Analysis Management Tool (May)

o Collective Progress Report (September)

o COP 26 and run-up (full year to November)

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of the Head UNEP FI and report directly to UNEP FI Nature & Ecosystems Lead and be in close cooperation with the Interim UNEP FI Banking Lead and the Banking & Nature Communications Lead. The consultant will with closely with colleagues in the Banking project team, the Nature & Ecosystems team, and with the wider communications, design and events teams.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills:
o Excellent English written, verbal, and visual communication skills with a high attention to detail

o Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to produce high-quality content to tight deadlines

o Ability to prioritize multiple activities at the same time

o Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations across diverse stakeholders in a multicultural and geographically diverse environment

Specific skills:

o Able to write and edit engaging content for a range of audiences on the topic of sustainable finance (articles, social media content, email newsletters, etc)

o Working knowledge of the financial industry, and/or experience in sustainable finance

o Able to create engaging content for social media, manage online channels, and provide campaign analytics (LinkedIn, Twitter, Hootsuite)

o Able to update and manage website content using WordPress

o Understanding of media relations and digital media strategies

o Able to build and develop strong networks with internal and external teams

o Able to plan and manage webinars online for global audiences

o Able to contribute to strategy and take a hands-on approach to delivering work

Academic Qualifications: A University degree in communications, marketing, international relations, business, journalism, finance, event management, public relations or a related field, or equivalent education and experience.

Experience: At least 2 years working experience PR, communications, marketing, journalism and /or events, preferably in a finance-related field. Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media, content marketing and press relations. Experience in using webinar and online meeting platforms, event coordination and website updates.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Strong writing and editing skills in English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
