Result of Service

Under the supervision of the Communications Officer and the overall guidance of the Public Information Officer, Communication and Awareness Unit, Office of the Executive Secretary, the consultant will undertake the following tasks in the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols (SCBD):

• Create and develop multimedia (audio/video) content in line with the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity, including content for the website, social media platforms, broadcast opportunities, and video statements by senior officials of the Secretariat.
• Read, review, and edit scripts and determine the best method for producing video from the script.
• Ensure that any and all third-party materials (photos, video, music, etc.) used in the video deliverables are licensed or cleared for use by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
• Edit footage and interviews, including adding subtitles as appropriate, into a variety of video deliverables intended for broadcast, web and for use on our social media platforms
• Develop and manage production schedules
• Provide coaching and assistance to senior officials of the Secretariat when filming video statements.
• Attend the UN Biodiversity Conference and provide video production support at this meeting.
• Evaluate analytics
• Recommend equipment purchases, upgrades, or replacements.
• Performs other related duties as assigned

Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational setting

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. At the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders agreed on a comprehensive strategy for 'sustainable development'. The Convention on Biological Diversity was opened for signature in Rio in 1992. The Convention has three main objectives: the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD) is located in Montreal and is administered by United Nations Environment Programme. Its main tasks are to arrange for and service meetings of the Conference of the Parties, including preparation of pertinent documentation, operation of the central node of the clearing-house mechanism, liaison and coordination with other international bodies and processes and, in close collaboration with these partners, the provision of technical support for the effective implementation of the Convention.

Duties and responsibilities

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Communications Officer and the overall guidance of the Public Information Officer, Communication and Awareness Unit, Office of the Executive Secretary and the staff of the Office of the Executive Secretary.

He/she will perform the following duties:

Manages video production within the Communication and Awareness Unit by:
• Pitching ideas and features that are in line with the objectives of the Convention
• Identifying formats, technical approaches and innovations
• Editing footage
• Producing original footage at official meetings, including the UN Biodiversity Conference
• Maintaining an image and audio bank
• Identifying and coaching voice-over talent
• Coaching and assistance to senior staff
• Conducting research on copyright for photo/video assets
• Preparing budgets and overseeing expenditure of productions, as well as procurement of equipment

Oversees and coordinates the use of video on digital platforms by:
• Generating video materials in response to current events and emerging issues, as needed
• Working closely with social media team to ensure that footage is ready for use in multimedia digital platforms
• Providing inputs to problem-solving, as well as ongoing improvement efforts related to efficiency and ease of creating and posting to all digital platforms
• Performing other related tasks, as requested by the Head of the Communication and Awareness Unit

Qualifications/special skills


Professionalism: Ability to understand complex issues pertaining to biodiversity; ability to work under pressure and to use limited time and resources effectively; flexibility to adapt rapidly to changing situations; ability to ensure that the highest possible quality outputs are produced.

Communication: Ability to speak and write clearly and effectively; ability to communicate effectively with audiences of various levels of seniority and technical knowledge, tailoring language, tone, style and format appropriately; ability to communicate with various stakeholders in politically sensitive situations with diplomacy and tact.

Teamwork: Good interpersonal skills, ability to work collaboratively with professional and technical staff at senior and junior levels from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Planning and Organizing: Ability to identify priorities, work to tight deadlines, handle concurrent projects and coordinate with the work of others.


- Advanced knowledge of the Adobe Suite particularly in the video and audio editing, mastering After Effects is required.
- Knowledge of Avid Composer and the broadcasters specs is required.
- Ability to work with a large or small production team.
- The incumbent should be proficient in the use of all production equipment: camera, audio, and lighting.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including effectively presenting information to non-technical partners
- Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and manage competing priorities is required.

Academic Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in media/multimedia production, production management, film making, or related area is required. A first level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in video production (both short and long formats), of which three (3) years at the national and international level is required. Experience with the latest technical developments and production techniques is required. Experience producing video content for various digital platforms is required. Knowledge of script writing and for broadcast is desirable. Familiarity with issues related to the Convention on Biological Diversity and its Protocols, the UN system and other international sustainable development-related processes is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is desirable.

Additional Information


In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the appointment/assignment remotely in view of constraints. Once local restrictions are lifted the incumbent may be requested to report to the office for filming and therefore must be eligible to work in Montreal, which is the duty station.


Applicants should be Canadian residents or citizens or have permission to work in Canada.


In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, travel is currently restricted, however travel may be required to attend the UN Biodiversity Conference (date to be confirmed).
