Work Location

Remote. Regular communication and reporting will be made through virtual means (email, MS Teams, and other VoIP).

Expected duration

Expected Starting Date 1st April 2021. The duration of the work is estimated to be 4 months, which could be spread over 6-9 months of the contract period, i.e Ending date 31.01.2022 or before if the work is completed.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between states. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival (www.cites.org). The CITES Secretariat is administered by UN Environment Programme and is located at the Geneva Duty Station.

This assignment is part of the CITES Secretariat’s work under the Outreach and Projects Unit (OPU), and will develop the visual identity manual for CITES as well as templates and design elements for various outreach materials, including the CITES website (http://cites.org). This will allow the Convention to convey its information and capacity-building materials in a more consistent, and user-friendly manner.

Under the overall supervision of Chief, Outreach and Projects Unit (OPU), the consultant will:

1. Develop a visual identity manual for all of the working languages of the Convention, which will be used for communication and outreach activities.

2. Develop various instructions, and templates for the manual, which include:
a. Virtual backgrounds and banners for webinar and online meetings
b. PowerPoint slides
c. Publications (factsheets and leaflets, studies, guides, annual report, analysis of CoP proposals, etc.)
d. Email signature blocks
e. Banners and other visuals for social media (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Instagram)
f. Basic colour schemes, style elements, imagery and iconography for use in online resources, which could also be applied to the CITES websites

Qualifications/special skills

a) Required years of work experience: Minimum 3 years’ experience.
b) Required field of work and where applicable, area of specialty: Minimum 3 years’ experience in editorial and graphic design or related area. Prior experience with the UN system, in particular designing publications, is highly desirable. Experience with the development of visual identity guidelines for other UN agencies or Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable.
c) Required education qualifications: University degree in arts, graphic design, communications or related area.
d) Required knowledge of languages: English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the CITES Secretariat. For the post advertised, Fluency in spoken and written English is required. Working knowledge of one of the two other working languages is desirable.
e) Competencies: To successfully undertake this consultancy role the incumbent will demonstrate the competencies of Creativity, Communication, and Planning and Organizing.
