Org. Setting and Reporting

The UNODC Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (35.5 hours) under the direct supervision of the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Expert, and the overall supervision of the Regional Representative.

The aim of the internship is to provide the selected candidate with hands on experience in the United Nations. The candidate will gain research skills as well as apply this research and drafting skills on the core components of the project: crime prevention, criminal justice, and violence against women . The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to contribute to both the planning of, and participation in, workshops held with counterparts to tackle the project’s core components, leading to a deeper understanding of how UNODC is working to promote criminal justice as well as end violence against women in the region.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

Responsibilities

•Contribute to the elaboration of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points and speeches;

•Assist in the administrative preparation of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences;

•Conduct basic research on criminal justice related fields;

•Attend and take notes at meetings, as required; and perform other tasks, as necessary.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

•Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)
(OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);

•Be computer literate in standard software applications;

•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and

•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written Arabic and English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an asset. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
