Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is located in the Office of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL). The Associate Political Affairs Officer (NO-B) reports to the Senior Political Affairs Officer / Chief, Political Unit. Within the delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer (NO-B) will be responsible to support the activities of the mission by researching, collecting, coordinating, analyzing and disseminating information on relevant political and other trends in order to support decision-making, early warning, policy development and planning for an integrated UN within the Mission. S/he generally provides basic analysis on political, socio-economic and other politically relevant developments in an assigned area.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
•Monitors, researches and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues as they pertain to the mandate of UNSCOL ;
•Develops networks of contacts and conducts outreach to them.
•Assists senior official with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
•Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
•Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in an assigned area.
•Provides input into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes.
•Creates databases that track mandate-relevant developments and provides other information relevant to assigned area.
•Performs other related duties as required.

Education

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, economics, law, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
Experience in drafting and research is required.
Prior experience working on conflict prevention, security and political issues is desirable.
Prior experience working with the United Nations is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Candidates for the National Professional Officer category shall be of the nationality of the country where this position is located.

This position is available for one year from the employment start date. Extension of appointment is subject to availability of funds, extension of the mandate, continued need for services, and satisfactory performance of the incumbent.
