Expected duration

The contract will be effective from date of signing until 30 September 2021 and in the case of successful performance may be extended upon confirmation of the organization’s needs.

Terms and conditions of payment

The consultant is expected to produce all Phase 1 deliverable inclusive of several rounds of feedback (to the extent that it is needed) to ensure final delivery within 30 days of signing the contract. Additional design services will be delivered on an on-call basis and paid upon successful completion of each assignment. Detailed specifications for each individual assignment will be given to the selected designer as and when the designer’s services are requested.

Duties and Responsibilities

The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is an international organization established under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The Authority is the organization through which States pparties to the Convention shall, in accordance with the regime for the seabed and ocean floor and subsoil thereof beyond the limits of national jurisdiction (the Area) established in Part XI and the Agreement organize and control activities in the Area, particularly with a view to administering the resources of the Areait contains.

Organizational Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Communications Unit within the Executive Office of the Secretary-General at the Headquarters of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) located in Kingston, Jamaica. The incumbent reports to the Communications Specialist.

1. Background

ISA publishes a wide range of materials to keep member States, UN entities, media, civil society, the private sector and other stakeholders informed about its programmes and activities. ISA is planning to contract a Graphic and Layout Designer on an on-call basis, to help the organization meet its growing need for quality design services. The successful candidate will provide technical support to the Communication Unit and implement the design and layout of ISA publications following the ISA Communication Guidelines.



Tasks and Responsibilities

Implement ISA’s visual style guide:
• Ensure that all publications are produced in line with the ISA visual style guide.

Design and layout of publications:
• Deliver creative and innovative ideas for high-impact publication design and layout;
• Design and layout publications for print and electronic distribution;
• Improve and edit art-work, photos, charts and other graphic elements;
• Create infographics to present data in a visually engaging format;
• Custom photo editing;


Phase 1 deliverables

The consultant will be expected to deliver one publication within 30 days of signing the contract. Additional design deliverables will be negotiated with the consultant upon successful completion of Phase 1 product.


Qualification and Expertise

The successful consultant is required to meet the following criteria:
• Strong theoretical and practical background in graphic and layout design, including the use of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite
• At least five years of progressive professional experience in graphic design proven through a portfolio of products
• Show a clear and mature style of design, demonstrating an understanding of the communication requirements of a UN or intergovernmental organization
• Proven experience of graphic production from start to published/printed product with knowledge of printing processes (offset and digital) and colour management
• Good understanding of new and evolving technologies and digital platforms
• Exceptional creativity and innovation
• Excellent composition and visual design skills
• Deep understanding of typography principals
• Attention to detail
• Excellent time management and organizational skills

Qualifications/special skills

Language requirement

Excellent command of English, particularly written; other UN languages an asset.
