Result of Service

The services will make available the report “Promoting Sustainable Finance and Climate Finance” in Arabic so UNEP FI can then disseminate it among its partners and members in the Arab region, and in global fora and through replication of final layout of the original report. The services will ensure high quality of translation, accurately reflecting the meaning found in the original source language (English) and rendering that meaning in the translated work. The services will also make available three key PRB documents in Arabic: PRB Signature Document, Key steps, Guidance on financial inclusion and financial health.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 300 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI promotes sustainable finance and helps the financial industry align with and contribute to the Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals.

UNEP FI needs a consultant to translate the recently launched report “Promoting Sustainable Finance and Climate Finance in the Arab Region” and make it available in Arabic. The report provides the first in-depth analysis of sustainable finance practices in a part of the world most vulnerable to the effects of climate change: the Arab region. The report investigates the most prevalent sustainable finance practices in six countries in the Arab region: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). It provides insight into developments in this area over the past two decades and consolidated data on how all six countries have adopted green growth strategies. It also includes insights from policy makers, as well as feedback from practitioners in the focus countries

The consultant will also be responsible for the translation of three other short documents to Arabic and will be in direct contact with MENA Regional Coordinator, and the MENA Project Support to discuss the precise scope of work and any specific expectations for the documents to be translated.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

For the Promoting Sustainable and Climate Finance in the Arab Region” report as well as the PRB Signature Document, Key steps, Guidance on financial inclusion:

•Ensure professional translation, proofreading and editing of all text, including figures, boxes, captions, sources and covers;
•Perform terminology research and use the correct terms and names consistently throughout the translated text and in cases after consulting with the MENA Regional Coordinator.
•Ensure translated report and other documents are complete in final version to submit to design.
•Check and correctly quote references to documents already published; - Pay attention to detail at all levels and check for errors (e.g. grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation, formatting) to ensure the translated text is an accurate, faithful and consistent rendering of the original text.

Outputs and Deliverables:

•“Promoting Sustainable Finance and Climate Finance in the Arab Region” Arabic version of the report is ready and submitted to design.
•PRB Signature Document, Key steps, Guidance on financial inclusion in Arabic version ready to submit to design.

Performance indicators:
•Progress in line with the translation timeline sheet agreed with the consultant.
•Delivery In Full, On Time.

The individual contractor will report to the Programme Management Officer, working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s MENA Regional Coordinator. Overall responsibility rests with the Head UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Knowledge of technical translation in multiple sectors such as finance, sustainable development, energy sector, development and economic issues or related fields would be a definite asset. Outstanding translation and editing skills in Arabic and English. Demonstrate effective organizational skills, project management skills, and ability to deliver services in an efficient and timely manner. Proven ability and capacity to deliver translations to meet tight deadlines to complete a project on time. Review of translations prior to delivery should include checking of spelling and grammar, confirming technical accuracy, and verifying overall clarity and fluency in Arabic language.

Academic Qualifications: First university degree in technical translation, international relations, business, economics and finance, sustainable development or an environmental field.

Experience: Minimum five years of professional experience in translation and editing including interpretation Service. Demonstrated experience in translating professional documents. Past work with UN will be an advantage. Knowledge of UNEP terminology will be considered an advantage Proven experience of translation/interpretation services. Experience working with international development organizations is desirable.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of Arabic is required for this position.
