Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is situated in the Aviation Security Policy (ASP) Section of Aviation Security and Facilitation (ASF), Air Transport Bureau is responsible for developing new and amended Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) relating to the security of the international air transport system; and is responsible for the maintenance of Annex 17 – Security. The Section also oversees the work programme of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) Panel of experts and its Working Groups as well as provides Secretariat support to the Secretariat Study Group on Cybersecurity (SSGC). The ASP Section is also responsible for the update and maintenance of AVSEC guidance material, including the Aviation Security Manual (Doc 8973), as well as relevant websites and portals. In addition, the Section provides support to the Assembly, Council, the Committee on Unlawful Interference (UIC) and the International Explosives Technical Commission (IETC).

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief, Aviation Security Policy Section, the intern will:

•Carry out research for policy papers and contributing to data collection on key trends and emerging issues in aviation security;
•Prepare and providing input for briefing notes, talking points, speeches and similar material for senior staff;
•Assist in the substantive preparation, organization and servicing of aviation security meetings in Headquarters;
•Provide assistance in maintaining records and datasets;
•Attend conferences and meetings (remotely where applicable) of interest and provide verbal and written briefing;
•Support in the preparation of outreach material such as talking points, briefing notes, speeches and presentations;
•Contribute to the day-to-day tasks as needed, including administration and communications matters; and
•Perform any other ad hoc assignments.

Education

At the time of application, candidates are required to have completed or be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second-level university degree or higher) in a field of study related to law, security, aviation, public administration, economics or a related field. Students who are enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) may exceptionally be accepted if deemed qualified for the position.

Applicants pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages should have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

Essential requirements: Fluent reading, writing and speaking abilities in English.

Desirable requirements: A working knowledge of a second language of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish).

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Interns are not paid. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by the intern.

The duration of the internship is between two to six months. The intern is expected to work five days a week, on a full-time basis.

Interns shall not be eligible to be engaged in any other form of employment within ICAO during the period of internship and shall not be eligible to apply for or be appointed to any post in the Secretariat or be contracted for any other remunerated employment with ICAO for the six months immediately following the end of their internship.

REMOTE INTERNSHIP (COVID-19):
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship.
