The duration of this contract is from 1 June to 31 October 2019. Five months of full-time work are requested.

Duties and Responsibilities

The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) Sustainable UN (SUN) Unit in Geneva has a mandate to support the UN System’s internal operations as the UN strives towards continual improvement of its environmental sustainability.

To mark the System’s progress and determine where more work is needed, SUN is tasked with coordinating the UN’s annual environmental inventory, which measures and calculates the footprint of some 65 UN agencies in the areas of greenhouse gases, ozone depleting substances, waste and water. The completion of the inventory is a large undertaking, requiring the collection and analysis of data from more than one thousand UN offices.

The SUN Unit requires assistance for the completion of the 2020-2021 UN System environmental inventory and support in managing the Issue Manage Group (IMG) for Environmental Sustainability’s Inventory Working Group.

This work requires the support of a junior individual contractor.

Specific tasks and responsibilities:
1. Support the SUN Emissions Reduction Officer in the processing of environmental inventory data
a. Calculate the environmental footprint of each UN office using provided calculation tools
b. Check results to ensure proper processing of data
c. Collate and format inventory results for presentation in the 2021 Greening the Blue Report
d. Assist the SUN team to provide inventory data in other formats as requested
e. Track carbon offset purchases based on inventory results

2. Assist in the management of the Inventory Working Group
a. Schedule working group meetings
b. Draft meeting minutes

3. Analyse UN environmental data for use in decision making
a. Under guidance from SUN, analyse both current and past inventory data as requested in support of the 2020-2030 UN Sustainability Strategy

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Key competencies:
• The able use of various Microsoft Office tools, particularly MS Excel; experience in the use of the ICAO travel calculator and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) is an asset.
• The candidate should demonstrate professional competence in data analysis with a high attention to detail.
• The candidate should have the ability to deliver outputs and work under pressure.
• Ability to conduct independent research and analysis
Academic Qualifications: An advanced university degree in environmental science, engineering, or related sustainability field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in the analysis of large data sets, preferably in the area of greenhouse gas inventories
Language: • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
