Org. Setting and Reporting

The position is located in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (RCO) in Pakistan and reports to the Strategic Planning /RCO Team Leader.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Economist will be responsible for the following duties:
Description of Functions
1-Advice and technical support to UN Country Team ( UNCT/RCO) on economic development and contributes to the UN joint programming process to strengthen the formulation of a new generation of UN joint programmes that are aligned with the SDGs, oriented towards investment, and have impact at the national level;
2-Support to leverage UN's regional and global programmes, to provide holistic and effective support to the country;
3-Contribute to the evaluation of existing UNSDF & development and implementation of the new UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2023-27 to ensure that the UN’s country-level operational activities effectively support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in country;
4-Develop analytical papers (concept notes) on public finance, economic resilience, growth, national planning and consolidate evidence-based analysis in support of sustainable development trends, challenges and opportunities in Pakistan
5-Advice Government counterparts and facilitation of knowledge building on economic and
development issues as well as building partnerships & working relationship with IFIs, Development Partners for common analysis, trends & recommendations.
6-Monitors regional and global economic trends and issues, analyzes their implications for the realization of the SDGs at the country level and recommends additional issues for consideration.
7-Researches, develops and presents policy papers, guidance notes and other knowledge based-tools and directs discussion in country-level forums to help influence and advance policy dialogue on achieving the SDGs;
8-Coordinates the preparation of UN flagship reports, including the analysis of data and ensures the provision of evidence to build the case for policies and interventions on SDGs
9- Support the identification and analysis of interventions that can impact multiple development goals and targets at the same time.
10-Support monitoring and reporting of progress related to SDGs and other national development frameworks, including to help strengthen national and local level data collection and statistical capacity.
11-Assists UNSDCF result groups in the implementation of joint workplans to ensure SDG-relevant and SDG-responsive UN operational activities for development;
12-Any other tasks as assigned by supervisor

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in economics or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in sustainable development policy, economic analysis or project/programme management in the context of development cooperation or related area is required.
Experience with IFIs is desirable.

Languages

For this post, fluency (reading/writing/speaking) in English and Urdu is required. Knowledge of any local language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available for six months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.
