Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located at the United Nations Security and Safety Service (SSS-Vienna), Division for Management, United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV).

The Security and Safety Service (SSS) is comprised of the Office of the Chief and three Units: Operations, Special Operations and Operations Support.

The Operations Unit consists of the Perimeter Sub-Unit, the Fire Sub-Unit and the Tour Sub-Unit (composed of four Teams).

The Special Operations Unit consists of the Investigations Sub-Unit, the Pass and ID Sub-Unit, and the Special Services Sub-Unit, which is composed of five Teams: Close Protection, Surveillance Detection, Conference Security, Emergency Response and Canine Teams.

The Operations Support Unit consists of the Security Administration Sub-Unit, the Security Risk Management Sub-Unit, the Security Systems Sub-Unit, the Training and Development Sub-Unit and the Safety Sub-Unit.

Under the overall command of the Chief of Service, the Security Officer is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the respective Security Sergeant or supervising officer in the assigned working area.

Responsibilities

Within limits of the assigned authority, the Security Officer may be responsible for the following duties in the assigned area of work:

•Screen all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the Vienna International Centre (VIC) to ensure authorized access.
•Operate SSS Vienna physical/electronic security systems and communications systems.
•Implement the proper application of SSS Vienna policies, Standard Operational Procedures, post-specific and daily orders.
•Provide information and directions to all persons associated with VIC-based organizations.
•Provide effective emergency response capability; be alert and respond to any potential or actual breaches of security, unsafe conditions, unusual activity and report these immediately.
•Control pedestrian and vehicular traffic; enforce VIC traffic and garage administration rules.
•Ensure that all UN property being carried from the VIC premises is checked for appropriate documentation.
•Provide security coverage for UN conferences and special events.
•Prepare various routine periodic reports as well as initial incident reports.
•Perform other related duties as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Additional security or military training is required. Must have passed the United Security Officer Test (SOT).

Work Experience

At least three years of security experience in the Police, Military or equivalent is required.
Experience in all areas of the security operation within the UN Security Service or another International Organization Security Service including investigation, physical security, personal protection, strategic and operational planning, fire prevention and suppression, emergency medical and hazardous material response, video imaging badge systems and methods of instruction or related area is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of German is desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise and a competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This temporary position is available until 31 December 2021. Filling of this temporary vacancy and actual duration is subject to availability of the post and funding.

If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
