Org. Setting and Reporting

The internship is in the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SVC) in the Secretariat of UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict (UN Action). The Internship is for an initial period of three (3) months with an opportunity for an extension of up to three (3) additional months, depending on the needs of the office. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns are required to work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member of the UN Action Secretariat. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period. Responsibilities

The duties of the Intern may include, but are not limited to:

•Support updating internal and external data bases of project documents and relevant information regarding projects funded by the CRSV Multi-Partner Trust Fund
•Prepare summaries of projects funded by the CRSV-MPTF.
•Support literature and desk reviews on key thematic areas of priority to the UN Action Network
•Support the monitoring of UN Action’s Strategic Framework, including collating and analyzing data on its impact. and its impact
•Liaise with the Graphics design unit, or support the designing and layout of reports, guidance and other materials produced by UN Action.
•Prepare briefing notes, presentations, and hand-outs for meetings.
•Support the organization of monthly Focal Points meetings and regular Resource Management Committee meetings.
•Attend meetings and prepare meeting notes to keep colleagues informed of relevant developments.
•Support UN Action in the implementation of its advocacy and communications strategy, including monitoring of social media accounts, and developing social media message content
•Support updating of UN Action’s website (stoprapenow.org).
•Support the overall work of the UN Action Secretariat and perform any other tasks required by the supervisor and management.
•Prepare an end of internship report.

Competencies

Professionalism: Ability to research and compile background materials, draft and edit written material in English. Ability to prioritize and manage time and resources efficiently and effectively. Familiarity in the use of various electronic resources on the internet, intranet, and other databases. Ability to serve as note-taker at meetings and /or produce summary reports. Use of tact in and ability to handle confidential information on sensitive political issues with due discretion. Awareness of the work of the United Nations including the Security Council and interest in conflict affected countries.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

Applicants must also:
-Be computer literate in standard software applications
- Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
-Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts.
