Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Office of the Assistant-General for Human Resources (OASG OHR) in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance (DMSPC), in New York. The intern will report to the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary-General or the Coordination Officer.

The internship will normally be for a duration of six months. All interested and qualified applicants who can start the internship between July 2021 and January 2022 are encouraged to apply, with a specific reference to the preferred dates of internship in the cover letter.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours).

The intern's role will be to provide general administrative support to the Office of the Assistant Secretary-General and assist the Human Resources Officers within the office in various functions in the Department of Management Strategy, Policy and Compliance as well as the lateral placement of staff subjected to Mission downsizing.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision and guidance of a Human Resources Officer, specific tasks may include:

•Support the preparation of senior-level meetings and conferences.
•Assist in planning and organizing meetings and information sessions and preparing presentation materials including graphs, tables, charts, and PowerPoint slides.
•Attend meetings with UN counterparts and coordinate follow-up to decisions.
•Assist in drafting notes, speech-writing, messaging, preparation of reports and background documents.
•Assist with the review of staff recommended for placement in view of the requirements to laterally reassign staff subject to mission downsizing.
•Assist in reviewing and preparing data/reports related to internal control, delegation of authority, and audit requests.
•Assist with reporting, drafting and editing of content for print, web and multimedia, events and publications.
•Develop an inventory of documentation to be retained, recording them in the office databases and shared drives.
•Evaluate adequacy of existing records management and reference tools, and participate in record keeping improvement projects and make recommendations.
•Provides statistics and runs reports related to the work of the office as requested.
•Perform other related duties, as required.

Education

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent).

Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, including Excel. They should also have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Educational background or exposure to human resources, public administration or related issues is desirable.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
