Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Information Management Unit, Department of Peacebuilding and Political Affairs (DPPA) and Department of Peace Operations (DPO), in coordination with the Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT). Under the overall supervision of the Senior Programme Officer in the ODCSS, the incumbent reports directly to the Chief, DPPA-DPO Information Management Unit.
The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours), with supervision and support of a staff member. We also consider part-time internships.

Responsibilities

Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in the whole department, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall. We offer internship opportunities in five broad areas. Experience in Political Affairs, Human Rights or Humanitarian and experience working with clients using a user-centric design process are strongly encouraged.

AREA 1: DATA ANALYTICS

Responsibilities
•Develop corporate visualization solutions derived from multiple data sources using state-of the-art tools to enable insight and decision-making at various levels
•Develop data models, including performance measures, to enable scorecard analysis
•Build interactive dashboards and reports, using corporate analytics applications
•Perform ad-hoc analysis and present results in a clear manner

Desired qualifications
•Experience with MS Power BI, Tableau or any other similar self-service analytics toolsets
•Experience with relational databases such as SQL Server or other databases
•Knowledge of geo-spatial analysis and geographic information systems such as ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS, Leaflet, Carto or Open Street Map
•Familiarity with analytical techniques such as sentiment analysis, predictive analysis or social media monitoring
•A passion for empirical investigation and for answering hard questions with data in a clear and precise way


AREA 2: DATA SCIENCE & MACHINE LEARNING

Responsibilities
•Work on exciting data science products and solutions to solve complex analytical problem
•Apply machine learning and statistical techniques particularly on natural language processing and computer vision problems
•Write highly optimized code that can be put into production

Desired qualifications
•Background in computer science, machine learning, information management, applied statistics, or a relevant area
•Programming experience in Python
•Experience with databases (SQL & NoSQL)
•Experience of working on natural language processing problems and text analytics


AREA 3: CLOUD DATA ENGINEERING

Responsibilities
•Assist in deploying analytics and machine learning solutions and pipelines on cloud
•Research and design architectures and frameworks for cloud-based advanced analytics and AI

Desired qualifications
•Background in Computer Science or a relevant area
•Programming experience in Python & Java
•Experience with databases (SQL & NoSQL)
•Prior experience or knowledge of cloud is strongly preferred
•Understanding of software engineering principles and best practices


AREA 4: UX/UI DESIGN

Responsibilities
•Help redesign our data analytics internal and external webpages to improve the interactivity and user-friendliness
•Develop style sheets for internal web applications to improve the look and feel, and standardize the properties of common objects
•Create template for data-driven dashboards/reports, including color, font, and layout
•Provide UI/UX design advice

Desired qualifications
•Keen interest in web design and human-computer interaction design
•Strong knowledge of Drupal
•Proficient in standard Business applications (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint)
•Working knowledge of Adobe products (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator) and HTML/CSS is desirable


AREA 5: WEB ANALYTICS

Responsibilities
•Conduct thorough analysis on website activities and provide recommendations to maximize our online channel
•Define metrics and KPIs to monitor online channel and user behavior
•Develop mechanisms to track the performance and usage of data-driven reports/dashboards on our online channel
•Develop and maintain a comprehensive suite of dashboards to help visualize and monitor the trends on our website’s traffic, usage, and performance

Desired qualifications
•Keen interest in web analytics, web performance optimization and data visualization
•Strong knowledge of quantitative analysis and methods
•Proficient in standard Business applications (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint)
•Working Knowledge of analytics tools (e.g. Power BI, Google Analytics) and Drupal is desirable


AREA 6: VIDEO EDITING

Responsibilities:
•Post-production audio and video editing, including editing raw video footage to create full-length videos of virtual meetings and seminars and creating short, promotional clips.
•Support live-coverage events, prepare internal summaries and reports to support internal and external presentations,
•Assist in organizing virtual meetings
•Conduct analysis of web activities and track performance and usage

Desired qualifications
•Experience in video editing and post-production
•Excellent communications skills
•Experience in Web Analytics and Data Visualization desired
•Experience in analysis of web activities and tracking performance and usage of data-driven reports/dashboards would be considered an asset.


AREA 7: FRONT END DEVELOPMENT

Responsibilities:
•Support the front-end development of one of our most popular tools by assisting the lead front-end developer
•Support the design of the front-end interface and optimize user experience

Required qualification:
•Experience in React and Node.js required

Desired experience in:
•JavaScript/ES6+, HTML and CSS
•Other front-end frameworks (e.g. Angular, Vue)
•Data visualization libraries (e.g. D3.js)
•Web content management frameworks (e.g. Drupal)
•Web application deployment on Cloud (e.g. Azure)
•Relational databases querying and connectivity
•Knowledge and experience of software development life cycle and lean/agile development methodologies
•Version control


AREA 8: OUTREACH AND COMMUNICATIONS

Responsibilities:
•Understand and support the implementation of the Secretary General’s Data Strategy
•Coordinate with multiple stakeholders to schedule meetings, gather feedback, and keep meeting minutes
•Support and upkeep of list of data strategy use cases, fill out relevant documentation
•Respond to questions about data strategy response as needed
•Coordinate and support data training and seminar activities as needed

Desired qualifications
•Excellent communication, coordination, scheduling, and speaking skills
•Background in data analytics or data policy
•Knowledge of additional UN languages desirable
•A passion for empirical investigation and for answering hard questions with data in a clear and precise way
•Experience with or understanding of Microsoft Outlook, or willingness to learn
•Experience with MS Power BI, Tableau or any other similar self-service analytics toolsets is desirable.

We are open to a broad range of educational backgrounds. Typically, our interns are pursuing studies in the following areas: Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Systems / Technology, Economics, Machine Learning, Data Visualization and Analytics, Web Analytics, Graphic Design, Web Design, User Interface Design, Human-computer Interaction, Digital Marketing or a relevant field.

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements

•be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
•be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent)

Applicants must also:
•Be computer literate in standard software applications
•Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
•Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
