Result of Service

Through these services the Initiative will be able to engage a broad range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, asset managers, insurers, and multi-lateral development banks and agencies – in a constructive dialogue about the nexus between economic development, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the financial sector. The services will also help promote the full integration of climate considerations into all aspects of the financial sector’s operations and services and help foster private sector investment in the transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient economy. Finally, the services will help the Initiative to broaden its outreach both within UNEP / UN and external to banks, insurers and investors, governments, regulators, private sector and multi-stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a strategic public-private partnership between UNEP and the global financial sector. UNEP FI works with approximately 400 financial institutions, which are signatories to the UNEP FI Statements of Environmental Commitment, and a range of partners and organisations, to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. Through its working groups and regional activities, comprehensive work programme, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution strategies and operations.

UNEP FI needs a consultant to join the FI Communications Team to work on all their communication requirements for Climate Change, including digital, web-based, paper and currently does not have the relavent professional expertise internally to carry out the stated tasks as shown below.

In line with the work programme delivered during the UNEP FI Annual General Meetings the consultant will carry out the following project tasks for the UNEP FI Climate Change thematic’s Programme of Work.

Implement a communications strategy for the climate change work programme that has clear objectives, messaging and transmission channels for each target audience during the contract period:

• Design and execute communications campaigns to promote UNEP FI’s climate change team’s collaborative initiatives with the financial sector, events, publications and news via diverse communication channels including press outreach, social media, online and email.
• Research and content development to build an online knowledge platform focused on climate change risks and opportunities related to the financial sector with a focus on the Arab region.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

The consultant will provide assistance in the following project/tasks for UNEP FI’s Communications work:
• At least 2 media releases and 2 sets of communications materials for publication, including via the UNEP FI website, for developments in both the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance and/or other deliverables of the climate change work-programme.
• Placing of at least 1 op-ed in the financial media, underpinning and reflecting developments in both the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance and/or any of the other climate-related work programmes at UNEP FI.
• Media outreach as required for the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance and/ for any other climate-related work that is ongoing under UNEP FI.
• At least 5 sets of social media posts as required, on an ongoing basis, for developments in the Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance and/or in other climate-related projects of UNEP FI, including reactions to external developments.
• Two monthly conference call with the Asset Owner Alliance Steering Group’s communications teams.
• Organization of at least 4 speaking opportunities at both UNEP FI and external events for Asset Owner Alliance representatives.
• Write and edit press releases in coordination with UNEP FI’s communications, regional and climate teams, and project partners.
• Manage the organization and coordination of press conferences, press briefings, interview and media events.
• Actively participate in communications for UNEP FI outreach work to members, other financial institutions, other UN agencies, NGOs, think-tanks.
• Handle other external communications on behalf of UNEP FI as necessary.
• Develop UNEP FI’s Press contacts list across relevant media.

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of Head UNEP FI and report directly to the Climate Change Programme Officer, UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment across teams; knowledge of, and a track record on, climate change or the environment an asset; knowledge of financial markets and institutional investors an asset; ability to cope with heavy workloads and prioritise across multiple and diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. The incumbent is expected to work independently and must have significant latitude to be self-directed and be highly motivated.

Academic Qualifications: A University degree in communications, marketing, international relations, finance, environmental studies, climate change, or public relations.

Experience: At least five years working experience in climate and/or finance sector communications. Up-to-date proficiency with communications best practices, including social media. Experience in implementing communications strategies. Exceptional proven writing, editing and written communication skills. Creative and resourceful strategist with a track record of proactivity. Proved track record in having worked with media previously, including arranging press briefing and press conferences. Experience in leading teams.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
