Communication work will enable UNEP’s projects, branches, and units to increase its visibility among the donor and partner country community, as well as within the UN Environment community and enhance the reach its knowledge sharing activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme’s Economy Division addresses environmental issues at global and regional levels, provides leadership and encourages partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing and enabling nations and people to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. Economy Division also works with many partners, including Member States, to advance the organization’s global goals as well as national efforts to transition to a low-carbon, green economy.
Within the Economy Division, the Resources and Markets Branch is focused on resource efficiency, inclusive green economy, and circularity. It leads the UNEP Green Economy Initiative and the Partnership for Action on Green Economy, One Planet Network, International Resource Panel and many other initiatives. These aim to shift national economies on to a more sustainable path, in which jobs and output growth are driven by increased investment in green sectors, and by a switch of consumers’ preferences towards environmentally friendly goods and services.
The objective of the consultancy is to plan, develop, and implement effective communications and outreach strategies to support the Resources and Markets internal and operational priorities, using the full range of modern communication tools, including social media and digital publishing.
Specific tasks and responsibilities per outputs:
Work closely with the UNEP Environment and Trade Hub and relevant colleagues of the broader UKRI GCRF TRADE Hub project, to:-
- develop communications plan on the main relevant environment & trade events ( WTO Public Forum, World Food Systems Summit, UN HLPF on SDGs, ITC good trade summit, UNCTAD XV, CBD COP 15, Climate COP 26, WTO Ministerial Conference etc.)
- support delivery of key communications outputs, by supporting review and revisions of suggested outputs
- Channel comms outputs through UNEP corporate comms procedures
- help maximise uptake of relevant comms pieces by publishing and republishing on relevant platforms such as UNEP corporate account, PAGE, GGKP, Green Forum groups, IISD newsletter and mailing lists, and other relevant online stakeholder news outlets, etc.
Work closely with the Consumption and Production Unit to:
• Further develop outreach and communication in relation to the UNEP value chain approach within UNEP and in the context of sectoral consultations, including consultations organized in the context of the UNEP Extractive Hub.
• Develop relevant communication material related to the value chain approach which could be used to familiarize UNEP colleagues and external partners with the approach.
• Support the organization and the dynamics of the sectoral consultations on the value chain approach, including the brainstorming planned in the context of the UNEP Extractive Hub. Such consultations will include those planned within the organization, including those related to the development of programmes and projects in the context of the MTS, and those engaging external partners.
• Develop relevant documentation (including reports, visuals, ppts) to capture the outcomes of the consultations and ensure the effective communication of those key findings in UNEP and to external partners.
• Help maximize visibility, knowledge and engagement in the above indicated sectoral consultations.
Academic Qualifications: An advanced degree in Communications, Marketing, International Relations, Environmental Economics or a related field.
A first level university degree combined with two additional years of relevant experience will substitute the requirement for an advanced degree.
Experience: 5 years proven professional experience designing, producing and publishing of marketing and messaging collateral through development of digital (graphic design) initiatives.
Proven professional experience in content development, report writing in English, related to development issues, environment and sustainability.
Proven professional experience developing and implementing style guidelines, brand use guidelines or visual identity manuals.
Proven professional experience in using Creative Cloud software, especially InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
Professional experience in web management platforms including Drupal and Wordpress
Language: Excellent proven writing and editing skills in English.
