Result of Service

Through these services the Initiative will be able to engage a broad range of financial institutions, including commercial banks, investment banks, venture capitalists, asset managers, and multi-lateral development banks and agencies – in a constructive dialogue about the nexus between economic development, environmental protection, and sustainable development. The services will also help promote the full integration of environmental considerations into all aspects of the financial sector’s operations and services and help foster private sector investment in environmentally sound technologies and services. Finally, the services will help the Initiative to broaden its outreach both within UNEP / UN and external to governments, private sector and multi-stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 400 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 ears UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.

UNEP FI provides the secretariat for over 20 active initiatives in the UN’s public-private partnership with the finance industry. Each initiative has reports, tools, news and guidance for which we need to generate awareness, visibility and knowledge across the international financial press.

With increased interest from the international press in sustainable finance, UNEP FI requires a media relations consultant, helping to maintain and manage the reputation of UNEP FI, it’s industry frameworks and alliances, and to launch the latest developments of key initiatives into the international press.

The consultant will report to the of Head UNEP Finance Initiative (UNEP FI). The consultant will report directly to the Membership & Regional Coordinator. They will work closely with the UNEP FI communications lead as well as other communications colleagues.

Output expectations:
- Media strategy and advice ahead of key launches to be undertaken and provided to the UNEP FI Secretariat.
- Advice on review/edit of press releases, op-eds for highest level of engagement to be undertaken and provided.
- Maintain a core group of tier 1 financial publications and key specialist publications and keep them updated outlining UNEP FI’s key output.
- Proactive media outreach and media relations for key campaigns to be undertaken.
- Media interviews with select publications as decided with the Secretariat to be arranged.
- Media follow-up & analytics for key campaigns to be undertaken.
- Advise on and develop regular communications with journalists on media list to be provided.
- Reader-friendly report contents in line with editorial standards to be provided to the Secretariat.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in media relations, sustainable finance, environmental studies, journalism, social science or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: Demonstrated at least 5 years’ experience gained in the financial services sector, in external communications, press office, financial journalism or related field. Demonstrated experience in sustainable finance or climate change is an advantage. Demonstrated knowledge of the finance industry is an advantage.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.

Special skills/knowledge:
- Extensive and active portfolio of international media contacts focused on sustainable and mainstream finance (banking, insurance, investment).
- Extensive experience in pitching sustainable/financial stories to media.
- Ability to write and review press releases, op-eds, key messages, reactive statements, and other press content.
- Ability to advise on effective media engagement strategies to promote sustainable finance initiatives to a primarily financial audience.
