The Sustainable United Nations (SUN) facility hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme in Geneva, is looking for a Consultant to operate its Facilities Management Helpdesk services.
The Sustainable United Nations (SUN) facility was established in 2008 with the aim to coordinate and monitor United Nations’ (UN) internal environmental performance in its road to achieve climate neutrality and environmental sustainability. Sustainable UN fulfils this role by assisting UN organisations in reducing the environmental footprint of their facilities and operations.
SUN is an active member of the UN Common Premises Task Team which oversees the establishment, refurbishment and management of UN Common premises worldwide. In its role, SUN will advise the Task Team members on matters related to sustainability in the common premises. In June 2021, the UN TTCP endorsed the guidance document called Important and Desirable Environmental Actions (IDEAs) for the selection of green UN offices. Produced by SUN, IDEAs provide guidance to UN facility managers for the selection of more sustainable UN facilities.
As part of a collaboration with the Development Cooperation Office (DCO), IDEAS will be turned into a 1h interactive online training module. The module will be integrated in various trainings that DCO will deliver to UN country teams.
An expert in the greening of facilities is necessary to provide the SUN Team with guidance on how to adapt the IDEAS document into the interactive training and develop any additional supports necessary to make the training effective.
The expert will also be necessary to support the SUN team in any other activities related to facilities management, from the analysis, on demand, of the building plans of specific UN common premises to the development of simple guidance on sustainable facilities management for DCO and UN Country teams.
The Sustainable UN currently does not have the relevant expertise nor team capacity to carry out the stated tasks.
Specific tasks and responsibilities:
• Assist the SUN team in the adaptation of the IDEAS Guidance into a training (task finalised by 15 September 2021).
• Provide technical input in interagency discussions on how to green UN common premises and review technical documents related to the selection of UN facilities in view of providing sustainable building advice (ongoing throughout the contract)
• Participate in UN Common Premises Task Force meetings providing technical input as necessary. (ongoing throughout the contract)
• Report to SUN on activities carried out, meetings attended, and other work carried out to support the greening of UN facilities (by 20 November).
Skills: Extensive relevant experience with facilities management and in waste management. Demonstrated drafting skills. Ability to organize, analyze and synthesize different types of information in a systematic manner. Well versed in using MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. Effective management skills, good coordination ability and team working spirit.
Academic Qualifications: Postgraduate degree in architecture, engineering, energy or environmental management, natural sciences or business management, or other related field of study. In case of more experienced candidates in the relevant area, the academic requirements could be reduced.
Experience: - Minimum ten years of relevant work experience in building energy performance and sustainable building codes and standards. In-depth experience with work in an international context is required. Experience working in a United Nations context is strongly preferred. Certification as expert in BREEAM or LEED or other equivalent international sustainable building standard is also a requirement to deliver the training.
Language: English is the working language of UN Environment. Knowledge of other United Nations languages is an asset.
