Result of Service

Substantive support provided to the strategic coordination and engagement of partners from high level to management under the purview of the UNEP Nature-based Solutions (NBS) Coordinator and the Head of the UN-REDD Programme Secretariat in the context of NBS follow up.

Work Location

Home-based. The consultant will be working remotely and report directly to the UNEP NBS Coordinator and the UN-REDD Programme Head of Secretariat

Expected duration

1 October 2021 – 31 December 2022 (approx. 142 work days / 15 months)

Duties and Responsibilities

Following the momentum forged by the 2019 United Nations Secretary-General Climate Action Summit (CAS), UNEP has been leading the efforts on growing the Nature-based Solutions movement globally. The effort has been further reinforced by the 2022 – 2025 UNEP Mid Term Strategy which focuses on transformative actions in tackling the three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. It will also be leveraged by decisions coming from a number of future political events convened by the UN system and partners such as Biodiversity COP15, UNFCCC Climate COP26, UN Food Systems Summit, UN Ocean Conference, etc.

Moreover, since the 2019 CAS, new initiatives have been launched, that are aligned or in support of the Nature-based Solutions movement such as the UN Decade on Ecosystems Restoration, The Green Gigaton Challenge, LEAF Coalition, and established initiatives such as UN-REDD programme, Great Green Wall. UNEP contributions to the movement have been growing exponentially over the past few years hence created a need for programme management and coordination role in headquarter

Given the above, the purpose of this position is to provide support to the implementation recommendation from the UN SG Climate Action summit and the overall climate change mitigation portfolio. Given the above, to support strategic work to be done in 2021-2002, there is the need for a consultant to support the partner engagement of Nature-based Solutions and forests. The main objective is to support the partner engagement and outreach on NBS in 2021-2022, providing support of the UNEP Coordinator of the NBS and the Head of UN-REDD Programme, in ensuring the planning, coordination and implementation of NBS related partner engagement and outreach activities – this will include growing partner base and deepening partner engagement.

The consultant is expected to:
• Develop partner outreach and engagement strategy.
• Develop background materials and content for partnership outreach.
• Research potential new partners and building and maintaining contact lists.
• Perform due diligence research on potential partners and supporting partner outreach and follow-up.
• Support internal communications relating to partners.
• Prepare briefing and supporting materials, concept notes, etc. as required, including developing, updating and maintaining database related to key facts, figures and statistics across spectrum of thematic areas related to NBS (coordination with subject matter experts).

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications:

Post-graduate degree or equivalent experience and advanced expertise in social, natural sciences, pertaining to international sustainable development issues

Experience:

• At least ten-fifteen years’ work experience supporting programme management in a development, environment or related field, including planning, communicating the results of comprehensive programmes, preparation of documents such as reports, briefs, and outreach materials, and/or stakeholder liaison to promote events and share updates, and support to preparation of large meetings.
• Experience in strategic and high-level partner engagement and working on large proposals with donors and international organizations.
• Ability to work independently and support a multi-disciplinary team, using independent judgement to plan, prioritize and organize a diverse workload in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly developed written skills in English, with the ability to originate, solicit, write and edit complex technical data and/or sensitive materials for distribution to target audiences.
• Experience drafting UN reports, presentations and other products.
• Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of colleagues and external partners to achieve organizational goals with a strong client service approach.

Language:

Proficiency in English.
Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
