Org. Setting and Reporting

These positions are located in United Nations field peacekeeping missions and special political missions and usually report to the Head Nurse or Senior Medical Officer.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Nurse FS-5 will be responsible for the following duties: (These duties are generic, and may not be performed by all Nurses at the FS-5 level):
Registered Nurse functions of providing emergency care include the following responsibilities:

•Provision of a range of medical services including establishing IV access and providing trauma care for injured patients.
•Triage and manage the care of injured persons in any location following an accident, natural disaster, or attack.
•Provide emergency care as required in a hostile or physically challenging environment, such as in buildings without elevators or in areas of irregular spaces that require kneeling, bending, lifting, and running. Transport patients via small aircraft, ambulance, helicopter, or other vehicle with high floors.
•Coordinates medical evacuation and cooperates with Medical Services Division in N.Y. and the receiving facilities in home countries;
•Assists in providing medical support during evacuation and repatriation;
•Advises evacuees on the requirements for evacuation and/or escorts patients if needed.


Medico Administrative tasks:

• Concludes or closes medical evacuation files to enable staff members to submit claims;
•Identifies and plans clinics' medical material, supplies and equipment requirements and raises requisitions accordingly;
•Liaises with Procurement Section and Supply Section to establish essential contracts for the mission;
•Assists in arrangements for the deceased;
•Develops logistic plans to support field satellite clinics, and support the CMO on follows up on implementation;
•Designs and implements outreach programs for mission personnel.
•Plans and organizes preventive and promotes medical fairs;
•Draws and implements duty roster for clinic personnel;
•Performs medical briefing for incoming staff and conducts first aid training;
•Maintains medical inventory and supplies and distributes medical supplies to outstations;
•Arranges medical appointments and examinations to mission personnel;
•Updates monthly medical reports
•Perform other duties as required

Education

Registered Professional Nurse who is a graduate of either an accredited Baccalaureate Nursing Programme (University) or an accredited Diploma Programme (4 years).
Must be certified and registered to practice in his own country or another UN member state.
Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is desirable.
Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent certification is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of eight (8) years of continuous progressively clinical experience in general nursing, intensive care, emergency medicine, and health administration is required.
Knowledge and understanding of relevant UN administrative policies and procedures is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

The purpose of this job opening is to generate a list of qualified candidates for inclusion in the Sr. Nurse, FS-5 roster. The entire assessment process takes an average of six months; all applicants will be notified in writing of the outcome of their application (whether successful or unsuccessful) within 14 days of the conclusion of the process. Successful candidates will be placed on the roster and subsequently will be invited to apply for field mission vacancies open only to roster members. Roster membership does not guarantee selection.
