Org. Setting and Reporting

Under the supervision of the General Foreperson of MPU, and additional supervision of the Forepersons of the HVAC and Plumbing Shops, the Apprentice shall perform preventative and corrective maintenance to the HVAC and Plumbing Systems in buildings at United Nations Headquarters. The Mechanical Apprentice shall perform routine tasks of limited technical complexity and shall assist more senior technicians in more complex operations and repairs.

These two (2) positions are located in the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS).

The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.


Within delegated authority, the Mechanical Apprentice will be responsible for the following duties:

HVAC Maintenance and Repair:
- Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in the UN complex.
- Perform corrective and preventative maintenance programs as set out by the General Foreperson of the MPU.
- Make adjustments to ensure adequate air flow, replace filters and belts.
- Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and diagrams related to HVAC equipment.
- Assist in performance or "troubleshooting" of malfunctioning or inoperative equipment, diagnose problems and complete repairs as necessary.
- Assist in operation and maintenance of the Chiller Plant.
- Other duties as assigned.

Plumbing Systems Maintenance and Repair:
- Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance for plumbing systems in the UN complex.
- Perform corrective and preventative maintenance programs as set out by the General Foreperson of the MPU.
- Read and interpret drawings, sketches, and diagrams related to plumbing equipment.
- Assist in performance or "troubleshooting" of malfunctioning or inoperative equipment, diagnose problems and complete repairs as necessary.
- Assist in operation and maintenance of Sprinkler and Standpipe systems.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Follow work procedures and schedules, record time and materials used for work orders.
- Assist with basic data entry and completed assigned work orders.
- Use materials and equipment efficiently.
- Complete assigned training courses including OSHA 10-hour General Industry and UN mandatory training courses within first 6 months of employment
- Complete certifications and licensing requirements appropriate to trade such as FDNY Fire Watch (F-60), FDNY Torch Operator (G-60), EPA 608 Universal Certification, and FDNY Certificate of Qualification for Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01).

High school diploma or equivalent technical school diploma is required.
A Technical Endorsement or Diploma in related technical field from a state-approved vocational education provider (or equivalent) is required.

Work Experience

Work experience is not required for this TC-3 entry-level position.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

This position is temporarily available for 6 months. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Examination (TCT) ) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat. Physical requirements: The Mechanical Apprentice makes repairs and installation from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, which require the incumbent to work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Physical requirements include the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations, frequent walking, standing, sitting, bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching and loading/unloading materials and equipment from storage to job sites. Frequently lift materials weighing up to 70 lbs.

Condition of the workplace: the incumbent may be exposed to various dust particles that may be hazardous to health. Must be alert to industrial safety hazards such as electricity, moving heavy objects and moving machinery.

The selected candidate is required to work either day or evening shifts, and possibly weekends on rotation as necessary. It is expected that they will assigned to different workshops to learn all aspects of their trade.
