Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Enterprise Solutions Service, Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT/ESS) in Valencia, Spain.
The incumbent reports to an Information Systems Officer within OICT/ESS.


Under the direct supervision of the Information Systems Officer and general supervision of the Enterprise Solutions Service Chief, the Senior Information Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

•Designs and develops responsive and accessible websites using Drupal .
•Provides support for Drupal websites and underlying databases; performs complex troubleshooting for Drupal websites.
•Participates in the development, programming, testing, debugging and implementation of new Drupal themes and modules; conducts version management.
•Manages, designs, creates, produces and maintains technical documentation for Drupal websites and custom modules and themes; manages and administers changes to technical documentation in accordance with prevailing change management and operation procedures.
•Serves as team leader in projects dealing with the planning, specification, design, development, implementation and maintenance of simple Drupal projects; liaises with users to define and specify requirements; builds, tests and modifies prototype Drupal websites.
•Contributes to feasibility studies, systems analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation and testing of new Drupal modules, themes and Drupal major and minor versions.
•Assists in the identification of user website needs, including business process and document workflow analysis, organization and maintenance of document repositories; identifies classification schema, retention and archival procedures; designs and develops workflow systems; conducts research on document/information/knowledge management computer applications’ tools, procedures and standards.
•Provides support on computer application systems development matters, including security and data backup and recovery.
•Drafts correspondence and communications; including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.
•Keeps abreast of developments in the field; conducts research on new technologies; performs benchmarking and proposes adoption of new Drupal components; assists in the implementation of new Drupal components.
•Provides guidance and training to new/junior staff; plans day-to-day work and supervises other staff as required.
•Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge of relevant programming languages (PHP, JavaScript, shell script) and ability to use programming skills to develop information systems. Knowledge of system development workflow and document flow processes, ability to conduct research and gather information from a wide variety of standard and non-standard sources. Ability to respond to changing requirements and assignments, ability to apply good judgment in the context of assignments given. Ability to perform a wide range of application software development and maintenance tasks under minimum supervision. High school diploma or equivalent is required. A first-level university degree in computer science, information technology or a relevant field is desirable.

Work Experience

A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in information systems analysis and programming, software development, and systems administration and maintenance is required.
7 years of experience with PHP/HTML/CSS/JavaScript is required.
4 years of experience with Drupal website development (theme and modules) and configuration (content type, views), is required.
3 years of experience with unit testing, git, CI/CD and DevOps, and Agile development is required.
2 years of experience with MySQL or MariaDB databases is required.
Experience of information security (Authentication, Identity management, compliance) is highly desirable.
Experience in developing adaptive/responsive websites using frameworks such as Bootstrap is desirable.
Experience with REST API integration is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language, particularly Spanish, is an advantage.


Qualified candidates may be assessed through a competency-based interview and / or other assessment methods.

Special Notice

Appointment against this post is on a local basis; candidates who are nationals of a European Union country or possess a valid residence and work permit in Spain are eligible for consideration. Passing the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat.
