Result of Service

The consultant will contribute to the implementation of activities of the project ’Inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable development in urban areas hosting Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey’.

Performance indicators:
• Outputs are delivered in a timely fashion and of high quality;
• Communications in dealing with partners are professional and systematic;
• Problem/issues for achieving results are identified early-on and workable solutions proposed;
• Well-coordinated and implemented UNDA project activities.

Expected duration

The duration of the assignment will be 12 months from 4 October 2021 to 4 October 2022. This contract will be output-based, with estimated work time of 264 days on 100%.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The UNDA-funded project ‘Inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable development in urban areas hosting Syrian refugees in Jordan and Turkey’ (2023H) is implemented by the regional offices for Europe and West Asia. To support the implementation of the project, UNEP needs a home-based consultant to provide substantive technical expertise and coordination support to ensure consistency of outputs and coherent approach. The consultant will provide substantive expertise to the implementation of the component in Turkey and ensure a coherent and coordinated approach on the substantive content and implementation in the two countries. The responsibilities of the consultant are detailed below.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: • Interdisciplinary understanding of the links between environment, climate change, sustainable development and human displacement;
• Experience in developing guidance and training materials;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as knowledge of MS Office and ability to operate standard IT and communications equipment;
• Teamwork and leadership skills to work with a diverse range of actors (various UN agencies, governments, humanitarian actors, academics etc.)
Academic Qualifications: • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, natural sciences, social anthropology, international development, international law (with emphasis on environment or disaster management) or international relations (with emphasis on environment or disaster management), or another demonstrably relevant field.
Experience: • Proven experience working on the integration of environment in humanitarian action
• Solid understanding of environmental assessment tools, with focus on a humanitarian setting
• Solid understanding of humanitarian planning processes – with experience of mainstreaming environmental concerns into these
• Experience working with UN related to environment or humanitarian work is considered an asset
• 4 years working experience
Language: Proficiency in English, knowledge of Arabic or French is an asset.
