Org. Setting and Reporting

UNICRI is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI’s goals are to:

- advance understanding of crime-related problems;
- foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
- support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
- facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This position is located in the Programme on the Nexus between Organized Crime and Terrorism, and in support of the Senior Programme Officer (Deputy Director) in programme and project development. The Programme on the Nexus between Organized Crime and Terrorism is beginning new capacity-building activities which require in-depth analysis and research of trends on the Nexus and related crimes in the requesting Member States or where entities operate. The internship is for an initial period of two months, with a possibility for extension of up to a total period of six months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the programme. Preferable beginning date: October 2021.

Due to the current international COVID19 emergency and related containment measures and international travel restrictions, the initial months of this internship will be done in TELECOMMUTING, i.e. remotely from home. Therefore, the candidates must be able to telework and must have all necessary arrangements and equipment to perform assignments in teleworking. Should the COVID19-related restrictions and containment measures be removed, and should the decision to further extend the internship be taken, the internship can be continued from UNICRI's HQ in Turin, Italy.

Responsibilities

The intern will assist the project team by performing the following tasks:
−Conducting research on the various topics related to the Nexus in different regions;
−Supporting with the preparation of the training documents for the capacity-building activities, including agendas, timetables, formatting documents, supporting Nexus team with completion of the training package;
−Contributing to the drafting of reports and other written outputs, including speeches and power point presentations;
−Contributing to the organization of webinars and in-person training events;
−Assisting in the implementation of the Nexus communication strategy;
−Perform other related duties upon request.

Education

−Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a.Be enrolled oh have recently graduated a second university degree or equivalent, or higher (Master's, PhD);
b.Be enrolled in the final academic year or have recently graduated from a first level university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);

−Be computer literate in standard software applications.

−Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

−Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience

Languages

Fluency in English and Arabic is required for this internship. Knowledge of French is an asset.

Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or papers based on such information except with the explicit written authorization of the Chief of Centralised Management Unit. Interns are bound by the same duties and obligations as staff members, and the information to which an intern has access in the course of the internship must not be divulged to external parties.

On completion of their internship, interns are required to complete a substantive report on their assignments. This will be included in their file and will be forwarded, upon request, to the sponsoring institution, government body or private organization.

UNICRI interns are responsible for all internship-related expenses that they incur. The United Nations accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon award of an internship, interns are responsible for securing adequate insurance coverage and are required to sign and return a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance of these conditions of service.

Candidates of certain nationalities must obtain a visa authorizing their stay in UNICRI duty stations before they depart to begin their internship. While this is the overall responsibility of the selected candidate, UNICRI will provide supporting documents in this regard.
