Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

The overall objective of the UNEP’s Economy Division is to encourage decision makers in government, local authorities and industry to develop and adopt policies, strategies and practices and technologies that promote sustainable patterns of consumption and production, make efficient use of natural resources, ensure safe management of chemicals and contribute to making trade and environment policies mutually supportive. It promotes the development, use and transfer of policies, technologies, economic instruments, managerial practices and other tools that assist in environmentally sound decision making and the building of corresponding activities.

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is the strategic partnership between the United Nations and over 400 banks, insurers and investors. For over 28 years UNEP FI has been shaping and driving the international sustainable finance agenda, setting global standards and growing a global network of leading financial institutions. Through its work-streams and regional activities, peer learning, methodology development, training and research, UNEP FI carries out its mission to help the financial industry align with and contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and with that take on the crucial role it must play in achieving a sustainable future.

UNEP FI convenes the Principles for Responsible Banking (PRB), a unique framework for ensuring that signatory banks’ strategy and practice align with the vision society has set out for its future in the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. 230 banks have now joined this movement for change, leading the way towards a future in which the banking community makes the kind of positive contribution to people and the planet that society expects. These banks represent more than a third of the global banking industry. This is a journey of unprecedented scale and scope at a time when such ambition is urgently needed.

UNEP FI also convenes insurers that are signatories to the Principles for Sustainable Insurance and co-hosts the Investment Leadership Programme with the Principles for Responsible Investment. Climate change, nature and SDGs and Impact as well as regional coordination and training are cross-cutting workstreams that require support digital and events support.

UNEP FI needs a consultant to work on its events and implementation of its digital strategy, including virtual events and webinars, website development, database coordination, use of digital technologies for relationship management and member value creation to identify opportunities to accelerate sustainability integration through digital transitions under way in the financial sector. UNEP FI currently does not have the relevant professional expertise internally to carry out the stated tasks as shown below.

Deliverables:
- UNEP FI Regional Roundtable North America held and follow up materials produced.
- Website development coordinated with agency and Secretariat on new menu design and templates for home page, project pages, posts/news/publications, microsites, event pages, password protected hubs.
- UNEP FI Regional Roundtable Europe held and summary of Regional Roundtables in 2021 produced.
- Website development coordinated for improved search functionality.
- Technical support provided for Leadership Council meeting.
- Support provided for COP-related finance events where relevant.
- Support provided for EU Taxonomy guidance launch.
- Website development – plan developed for Phase 2.
- Website development – phase 1 user testing deployed
- Communications plan developed for SDGs & impact workstream in 2022.
- Digital strategy implementation – plan developed for database and secure digital process to manage signatory information, reporting and monitoring.
- Global Roundtable and 30th Anniversary event and campaign plans developed.
- Global Roundtable and 30th Anniversary events plans coordinated.
- Digital content strategy updated.
- Database development plan initial phase coordinated.
- Interactive digital communications channels enhanced to increase value proposition to members.
- Interactive digital communications channels enhanced for external stakeholder engagement
- Enhance digital accessibility and usability of products /resources.
- Develop digital resources to support implementation of principles and capacity building resources.
- Digital resources developed to enhance processes for consultations and surveys/feedback.

The consultant will report overall to the Head UNEP FI, and on a daily basis to Membership and Regional Coordination Manager, UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong interpersonal skills and ability to organize engaging webinars and events; ability to project manage multiple tasks across diverse projects in an organized and timely manner; attention to detail. Knowledge of social media, website development and virtual communications channels is desirable, as is experience of writing copy for online audiences. The consultant is expected to support the secretariat in delivering engaging events and implementing digital strategies. The consultant should have the ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multicultural and geographically dispersed environment across teams. A hands-on, pragmatic approach is desirable.

Academic Qualifications: A University degree in communications, marketing, international relations, business, event management, public relations, technology, law or a related field.

Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience related to event management, communications, digital technologies, databases and/or marketing. Up-to-date proficiency with best practices in webinar and virtual event organisation, digital communications tools and website management. Experience in social media and communications platforms highly desirable.

Language: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Other United Nations languages are an asset.
