Duties and Responsibilities

Background

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment. We aim to achieve this mission by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

UNEP’s Economy Division supports partners across governments, private sector and civil society to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices for sustainable development. Located within the Economy Division, the Resources and Markets Branch enhances the capacity of partners to integrate environmental considerations into economic policies and practices. A particular focus of Resources and Markets Branch is UNEP’s work related to Green Economy.

The Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE) brings together expertise and guidance of five UN agencies to assist partner countries in their sustainable development. PAGE’s assistance spans the three economic, environmental and social pillars of sustainability to support the countries’ achievement of Sustainable Development Goals and the climate agenda. Specifically, PAGE seeks to put sustainability at the heart of economic policies and practices to support the transition to green and inclusive economies. Purpose

The objective of this consultancy is to inspire and inform the transition to greener economies and recoveries from COVID-19, particularly through raising the visibility of success stories, lessons learned, and best practices of advancing achievement of SDGs, and climate and biodiversity targets by making economies more green and inclusive.

The Secretariat of the Partnership for Action on Green Economy does not possess this expertise in house and needs to seek for outside assistance.

4 Specific tasks and responsibilities per outputs

Under output 1:
• Identify key opportunities for outreach activities, side events and communication campaigns that foster PAGE visibility; prepare related concept notes and comms materials, initiate and coordinate events with partners, and secure high-level speakers and participants.

• Develop outreach strategies related to events, draft and edit related background and online materials (presentations, briefings, speaking points, press releases), publish related content and secure news coverage.

• Specific opportunities include, but are not limited to, PAGE-UNEA side-event, PAGE-HLPF side-event, PAGE Ministerial Conference, COPs and other global and regional conferences and events related to sustainability and green economy.


Under output 2:
• Develop clear PAGE branding and key message to communicate its benefits and achievements. Draft, edit, update related materials to promote the partnership’s highlights (involving writing, preparing presentations, drafting, editing and publishing newsletter, flyer, brochures, annual reports, country updates, country stories and narratives, articles).

• Provide written inputs to PAGE Management Board and Steering Committee to regularly update on communications and outreach work and upcoming communication and outreach opportunities.

• Advise on the application of PAGE publication guidelines for publications of the partnership, in cooperation with all PAGE agencies (development of templates, common features, coordination with editors, layout, proofreading and quality assurance).

• Themes include PAGE Strategy 2021-2030 as mechanism to help achieve SDGs and climate, nature and pollution targets; PAGE’s contribution to greening of UN system’s support for COVID-19 recovery; and PAGE Economic Policy Advisory Group.

Under output 3:
• Guide the overall development and communication strategy of the website and deliver related content and stories. Draft and edit text in coordination with colleagues from PAGE Secretariat and Agencies. Secure the functioning of technical website settings, creation of new features and continous improvements.

• Facilitate social media engagement and identify and establish new channels and partnerships for publicizing PAGE and its results.

Under output 4
• Engage with focal points for PAGE countries, and in consultation with PAGE secretariat and PAGE Agencies, support the development of country specific communication strategies and materials. Summarize best practices and develop guidance on key communication activities.

• Identify country achievements jointly with country partners and help publize them widely. Advise on on PAGE publication guidelines and their application for country reports and other country documents.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s) in communications, journalism, environmental economics, international relations/development, public policy, public administration, economics or a related field.
Experience: More than 5 years of work experience in communication and global outreach, including experience of working with mainstream media, organising high-level events and international conferences and in the fields of journalism and public relations.
Language: Excellent proven communication and writing skills in English are required. Knowledge of other UN languages is an advantage.
