Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre in Lome, Togo within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The UNIC is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), and UNIC Lome is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Togo.
The UNIC is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating about its work and disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in French and local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves.

The incumbent is under the overall supervision of a Public Information Officer (Desk Officer) in the Programme Support Section (PSS), ICS at UN Headquarters and reports directly to the National Information Officer (NIO) in UNIC Lome.


Within delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

•Assists in the review of sources to identify appropriate materials that meet the information needs of the UN Information Centre and its information clientele.

•Assists in maintaining the audio-visual library and communication material, conducts periodic inventory and evaluates the information needs of the Centre, requests publications and multimedia information materials from the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) as needed.

•Assists in development and maintenance of relevant databases, keeping data accurate and current, and prepares new material as needed.

•Initiates claims and obtains updated materials, in connection with research requests by UNIC patrons.

•Provides statistical data for assessing usefulness and relevance of posted materials and maintains statistics on the service provided and workload indicators.

•Provides technical support and instruction to UNIC patrons in using electronic resources and reference tools to obtain information.

•Maintains and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages and other social media accounts administered by the UNIC.

•Assists in planning, implementation and evaluation of public information activities promoting the work of the United Nations.

•Submits regular backup jobs for databases on various platforms and performs other routine maintenance procedures that ensure the integrity of library data, orders and ensures provision of documents, reference materials and necessary equipment for the UNIC.

•Provides technical support for digitization operations.

•Provides visitors with information on the UN and specialized agencies; responds to queries on and requests for UN reference materials; conducts briefings on related subjects to individuals and groups; liaises and coordinates with local libraries and with the Dag Hammarskjöld Library in UNHQ.

•Co-ordinates work and/or participates in training of junior support staff.

•Provides administrative support for the UNIC, as needed.

•Performs other related duties as assigned.

A High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of experience in library work, archives, information network administration, public information, journalism or related field is required.
Experience providing communications support to an international organization such as the United Nations or similar is required.
Experience working with digital communication outlets, including database-driven websites and social media platforms is required.
Experience in drafting content for different publishing formats and/or platforms is desirable.
Experience in digital photography is desirable.
Experience working with tools, techniques, and/or software utilized in the production and editing of multimedia materials for broadcast, print, web, and social media outlets is desirable.


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
