Result of Service

The consultant’s overall objective is to ensure collaboration and operational efficiency needed in the implementation of the World Urban Pavilion project. In doing so, the consultant implements, monitors, evaluates, and reports on the World Urban Pavilion project and develops and maintains effective working relationships

Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting: UN-HABITAT, Global Solutions Division, Urban Practices Branch, Human Rights & Social Inclusion Unit.

Duty Station: Nairobi

UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate and affordable housing for all. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector, to help build, manage, plan and finance sustainable urban development.

UN-Habitat is working with the Urban Economy forum Association (Canada) to establish the Regent Park Urban Pavilion which will be a global knowledge exchange hub focusing on best practices in inclusive urban development. The Pavilion will share science, research, and innovation, supporting cities and countries around the world to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 by 2030.

To achieve this goal, the Pavilion will be a platform for governments, city leaders, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, the private sector and the general public to catalyze new thinking about urbanization, sustainability and an approach to development that leaves no one behind. The Pavilion will establish global campaigns and pilot projects that will demonstrate and test innovative approaches to current and future urban challenges, including climate change, affordable housing, community engagement, and building community capital.

The Pavilion will be based in Regent Park, Toronto, Canada, and highlight the world-renowned revitalization of this community as an example of how a challenged inner neighborhood can be re-imagined and transformed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer, Human Rights and Social Inclusion unit, the consultant will undertake the following additional duties and responsibilities in the duty station of Nairobi.

a) Manage the Urban Economy Forum project including but not limited to developing the workplan and timeline for the project, facilitate meetings between the different partners and stakeholders of the project, monitoring of the project’s progress and facilitate consultations between UN-Habitat and partners in Canada.

b) Coordinate the Canada SDG Cities project including but not limited to facilitating the project implementation, organizing stakeholders’ meetings, monitoring the project’s activities, coordinate communication with the different partners and stakeholders, facilitate the project’s evaluation and development of new partnerships between UN-Habitat, City of Kitchener and City of Brampton.

c) Coordinate the Regent Park project under the World Urban Pavilion including but not limited project implementation, organizing of stakeholders’ meetings, communication with the donor and new partners and reporting

Knowledge of project management and development issues. Demonstrated ability to complete in-depth studies and to formulate conclusions and/or recommendations. Excellent knowledge of Excel and Word. Academic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in International Relations, preferably in: Project Management, Law, Social Sciences, International Development, Programme Support and Political Science is required.
Experience: At least 3 years of relevant working experience is required.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For this assignment, excellent proficiency in spoken and written English is required
