Result of Service

The primary aim of these services is to: support the dissemination of the project findings to target audience and key stakeholders (including policy makers, businesses and service providers, investors, civil society groups, and consumers); improve awareness and buy-in from target audience on the use of green techs to reduce consumer food waste; enhance overall visibility and impact of the project; ensure coherence with communication and outreach activities of the Economic and Trade Policy Unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global, regional and national level. This consultancy is posted in the Economic and Trade Policy Unit of the Resources and Markets Branch of the Economy Division. The Economic and Trade Policy Unit (ETPU) contributes to UNEP’s Sub-programme on Resource Efficiency by generating and disseminating knowledge, raising awareness, facilitating discussions, and forging strategic partnerships to advance a transition to inclusive green economies.

The Economic and Trade Policy Unit is leading the project “Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at Consumer Level”. The project aims to support countries in harnessing green and digital technologies to reduce food waste at consumer level; contribute to the attainment of the SDGs and climate goals; support countries in Building Back Better from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Existing research under the project has indicated the need for effective graphic and multimedia outreach to widely disseminate findings from the project and get buy-in from target audience, including policy makers, businesses, civil society groups and consumers.

The Economic and Trade Policy Unit currently does not have the required technical expertise in-house to deliver these activities and therefore requires the services of a consultant.

The individual contractor should have a background in graphic design and multimedia communication, with technical expertise on design and production of multimedia outreach materials, such as infographics, social media cards, brochures, short videos, animation creation and audiovisual postproduction. The contractor will also support communications and outreach associated with the project.

Specific tasks and responsibilities per outputs

Design and create 2 short videos (2-3 min each) based on the key findings and messages of the project. (Output 1)
• Identify target audience and tailored approach to influence them.
• Develop a storyline to summarize and present key findings and messages of the project.
• Design and develop images, animation and video clips.
• Manage editing and audiovisual postproduction.
• Publish the final products on multimedia channels.

Develop 3 infographics about key themes in the project (Output 2)
• Identify key themes that of strategic importance for communication and outreach.
• Develop storylines of the themes.
• Collect and process relevant data and information from the project.
• Design images, illustrations, and diagrams.
• Finalize the infographic and publish online.

Design and develop 5 social media cards with key messages of the project (Output 3)

• Identify target audience on social media and define expected results.
• Tailor key messages to target audience on social media.
• Design and develop graphics, illustrations with key messages.
• Finalize the products and publish on social media.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills: Concentration, accuracy and great attention to detail are required; self-motivation is required; excellent communication skills are required; knowledge of multimedia channels and social media platforms is a strong advantage.
Academic Qualifications: First level university degree in Graphic Design, Communication or related fields is desirable.
Experience: Minimum of 3 years of work experience related to graphic design and multimedia communication. Experience in using Publishing and Creative design software is required. Experience in animation creation and audiovisual postproduction is required. Experience in production of communication and outreach materials (such as infographics, social media cards, brochures) required. Relevant working experience within the UN system or other international organizations is desirable. Working experience in areas of environmental policy/green economy/sustainable consumption and production is a valuable asset.
Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is required
