Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Education Outreach Section of the Outreach Division in the Department of Global Communications. The Education Outreach Section manages the United Nations Remember Slavery Programme and The Holocaust and United Nations Outreach Programme, the United Nations Academic Impact programme and works with civil society to promote the International Day of Peace, and helps bring global Model United Nations activities in line with actual United Nations rules and procedures. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Service of the Outreach Division.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Chief of Section will be responsible for the following duties:

• Leads, plans and manages the activities undertaken by the Educational Outreach Section of the Outreach Division, including producing learning materials and organize educational events on the United Nations for students, teachers, academics and the public, to build long-term support for the Organization;
• Oversees the management and development of the Section’s programmes, including the United Nations Remember Slavery Programme, the Holocaust Outreach Programme, the United Nations Academic Impact programme; and Model United Nations activities;
• Conceptualizes and manages educational projects to expand outreach to students worldwide, including through student conferences and with the use of new technologies;
• Liaises with UN departments, offices and other partners, such as specialized agencies, academic institutions and civil society organizations to coordinate projects in support of educational outreach;
• Recruits, evaluates and manages the staff of the Section, providing guidance and encouraging professional development;
• Oversees the use of financial resources allocated to Educational Outreach, with a view to maximizing impact, including preparation of budget requests and performance reporting;
• Seeks to expand resources in support of educational activities by exploring sources for extra-budgetary funding;
• Provides substantive input to reports, evaluations, talking points, and departmental submissions to inter-governmental bodies as regards activities carried out in the area of educational outreach;
• Fosters teamwork among the staff of the section, and encourages cooperation and communication with other units in the Division and the Department.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, education, international affairs or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, of which five years are in an international setting, is required.

Experience working with external partners including academic institutions, civil society organizations, specialized agencies is required.

Experience in managing substantive communications programmes is required.

Experience in developing educations materials/information toolkits is desirable.

Public information experience in the UN system, or similar international organization, is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
