Duties and Responsibilities

1. Organizational Setting, Purpose and Objective:
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
UNEP Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) is looking to ensure optimum visibility for UNEP and its cause within the region and for effective engagements with a wide range of stakeholders and audiences, and to further enhance the public engagement on core issues such as climate change, nature, waste management, and pollution along with other inter-connected matters across the region that require creative planning and execution. The individual contractor (IC) will support in enhancing UNEP ROWA’s communication outreach and regional visibility by supporting on communication including content, designing, adapting, and editing communication products for dissemination through project and working with the sub-programmes. In addition, the IC will provide support on programme management and general support to daily operations under the guidance of the Regional Development Coordination (RDC).

2. Duties and Responsibilities (Included in JO Posting): Under the guidance of the Regional Development Coordinator, the individual contractor will support UNEP West Asia’s regional office, on communication, administration and project support, in addition to:
1) Support the development and production of communication and advocacy instruments and materials for marketing and awareness-raising campaigns, including briefing materials and press releases and media outputs in coordination with the projects team.
2) Identify key outreach opportunities and media networks and contacts in West Asia region such as other related events for dissemination of products.
3) Prepare draft content for all outreach materials including pamphlets on projects and specific topics for the region in both languages: Arabic and English.
4) Prepare advertising material including but not limited to banners, brochures, pamphlets, billboards, OPEDs, web campaign, campaigns for broadcast TV and Radio spots, print and social media (in both Arabic and English).
5) Support in developing a series of stories from projects and related environment topics in the region that can be used for the website, social media, and other media (in both Arabic and English).
6) Support in developing and deliver promotional videos on environment topics in the region that can be used on social media and other communication channels.
7) Hands on support in all communication with countries and agencies through regular updates of the UN Country Team overview of work, and organizing, attending, and supporting meetings followed by preparation of documents/presentations, organizing meetings and follow ups on Regional Facilitator activities, etc.
8) Support in planning UNEP’s engagement in EXPO 2020 through communication products and social media engagement.
9) Identify and collate a database of regional and international media outlets with which UNEP could build links to enhance advocacy, outreach and strategic communications.
10) Produce, in infographics forms, annual progress report capturing all deliverables, achievements and impact of the awareness activities against a baseline to be established at the beginning of the assignment.
11) Draft letters, emails and other products related to several sub-programmes and events.
12) Support the management on UNEA-5 regional preparations and assist in producing the report of the consultation meetings.
13) Support in meetings and draft minutes of meetings organized by the RDC, including those of projects, activities and civil societies.
14) Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Secondary Education and knowledge and interest in environment, junior experience in communication and social media, writing skills.
Experience: - Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience at the national level in communication and programme management - Experience in designing and content creation - Good understanding demographics on the region and UNEP’s area of work
- Strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to transfer the required information to a diverse audience
- Ability to prioritize assignments and requirements, and multitask as needed
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position fluency in oral and written English and Arabic is required.
