Org. Setting and Reporting

These positions (2) are located primarily in the UN Webcast Unit, Audio Visual Services Section, Coverage and Media Services Branch, News and Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The UN Webcast broadcasts daily on UN Web TV website (webtv.un.org) and Social Media platforms, live and on-demand video coverage of United Nations meetings and events held at UN Headquarters and major United Nations conferences held at other locations worldwide. Incumbents report to the Chief of the UN Webcast Unit.

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Assistant under the direct supervision of the Chief of UN Webcast Unit is responsible for the following duties:

• Assists with the live and on-demand webcast coverage on UN Web TV (webtv.un.org) of United Nations meetings and events that are subject to cost-recovery fees.
• Coordinates with Member States, UN Departments and other clients on webcast coverage requests, scheduling events for live coverage, providing costs estimates, creating Service/Sales Orders and monitoring payments to cost-recovery fund.
• Accesses the cloud video platform and/or Media Asset Management System (MAMS) to retrieve, edit, and publish webcast videos to the UN Web TV video platform. Prepares and inputs appropriate metadata and tags for each video clip into the video Content Management System for publishing on UN Web TV as well as for scheduling live channels.
• Assists with the management and maintenance of the UN Channel on YouTube, and UN Web TV's Social Media accounts on Twitter and Facebook.
• Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format for promotional and other material, including infographics, and short promo and/or PSA videos.
• Provides general office support; responds to complex information requests and inquiries; processes, drafts and finalizes correspondence and other communications; sets up and maintains files/records, organizes meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.
• Coordinates administrative services, including preparing, monitoring and processing various requisitions, service contracts and payment vouchers, coordinating special assignments and related travel authorizations, etc.
• Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of information communications products and services.
• Manages, updates and further develops internal databases; updates web site, to include drafting and editing content; assists in design, development and maintenance of Internet applications; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
• Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required; retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information in requisite programming languages for Web format or inserting into database after determining appropriate categorization; preparing new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; preparing and updating index of documents; posting documents on the UN web and/or development servers and ensuring the appropriate directory location; checking and testing for multiple browser support, etc.
• Researches, compiles and presents basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services.
• Monitors the performance of digital audio workstations and other computer-based editing systems with respect to proper digital file management; review entries, file storage, retention and deletion practices to ensure consistent application of basic guidelines; identifies problems/issues and liaises with appropriate personnel for their resolution.
• Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences, media functions, etc.
• Provides guidance/training to junior staff.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public communication, internet broadcasting, information systems or related area is required.

Experience with streaming media technology is required.

Experience with video editing and publishing is required.

Experience with website maintenance for multimedia content is required.

Experience with live and on-demand Social Media production is desirable.

Experience with Enterprise Resource Planning system is desirable.

Experience in video Content Management Systems and/or cloud video platforms is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

The appointment or assignment and renewal thereof are subject to the availability of the post or funds, budgetary approval or extension of the mandate.

This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to staff rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules. All staff in the General Service and related categories shall be recruited in the country or within commuting distance of each office, irrespective of their nationality and of the length of time they may have been in the country. A staff member subject to local recruitment shall not be eligible for the allowances or benefits exclusively applicable to international recruitment.

Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.
