Expected duration

The expected duration of this consultancy opportunity is 9.25 work months (depending on exact level of experience of the selected candidate) over a contractual period of 10 months from February to November 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 130 Governments (see www.ipbes. net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Under the guidance of the IPBES Head of Work Programme (Section A) and the IPBES Head of Communications (Section B), the Graphic Design Expert will:

A) Summary for Policymakers and full report for IPBES Sustainable use of wild species Assessment and Values Assessment: Cover design, layout of text for a total of 2,700-2,800 printed pages, redrawing of 400-450 figures/tables, selection of photos: due by end November 2022

B) Design of event visual identity for the ninth session of the IPBES Plenary, as well as physical and electronic branding elements: due by May 2022

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications:
An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Graphic Design, Communications, Public Information, Journalism, Marketing or a related field is required. A first-level degree with two additional years of directly relevant experience may be excepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience:
At least ten years of experience in graphical design work that covers the areas outlined under the roles and responsibilities section.
Language:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English and/or French is required.

Additional Information

Candidates should be prepared to submit upon request:
Evidence of recent (within the last five years) design experience for science or environment- related work.
Evidence of recent (within the last five years) design and layout experience of large (more than 200 pages) complex publications (print and electronic).

A consultancy engagement resulting from this job opening will be made under United Nations Assignment Level C: This level is authorized to engage an individual with extensive relevant professional experience requiring specialized or technical knowledge and skills. Individuals at this level will be expected to develop new approaches, techniques or policies and/or design guidelines, standard operating procedures and a project's theme. Individuals would be engaged in projects of broad scope and considerable depth that will have an impact on the overall execution of programmes or service of a function or various interrelated areas.
