BACKGROUND
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer and healthier places with better opportunities. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society and the private sector.
The Land, Shelter and Housing Section of UN-Habitat is mandated to develop, test, and disseminate pro-poor and gender responsive land tools and approaches within the continuum of land rights framework. Established in 2006, the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) is a coalition of 83 international partners concerned with rural and urban land issues, working together to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development by promoting secure land and property rights for all, demonstrated through country-level interventions.
In the past years, GLTN has been expanding its work in the Arab region and in conflict-affected contexts to advance housing, land and property rights of vulnerable groups, including women. Women's housing, land, and property rights contribute to preventing and recovering from conflict and fragility by reducing the likelihood of violent conflicts re-igniting and assisting communities in emerging and recovering from war. They increase food security, agricultural productivity and production, and they are critical to promote the realization of other interconnected human rights, such as an adequate standard of living, adequate housing, protection against forced eviction, and gender equality. Further, secure land rights improve the trust in institutions, a critical factor for state and peacebuilding in fragile settings.
The key aspects of the GLTN work in this context comprise good land governance, capacity development and awareness-raising, supporting land-related research and project implementation, disseminating inclusive and gender responsive land tools, and land sector coordination. The aim of this consultancy is to develop two animations to convey the key messages on Women, Land and Peace in an engaging and easy-to-perceive way.
The consultant will collaborate with UN-Habitat and GLTN colleagues, and other colleagues from the Housing, Land and Property (HLP) Area of Responsibility (AoR).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the overall leadership of the Land, Shelter and Housing Section of UN-Habitat and the oversight of the Regional Office of the Arab States, the consultant will report to the Human Settlements Officer who is leading the portfolio. The aim of this consultancy is to implement activities related to the stream of work on advancing housing, land and property rights - with a focus on women’s HLP rights, and land and conflict. The responsibilities include the development of two animations: a short animation for advocacy/communication purposes; and a longer animation to be used as a learning tool to convey the key messages on Women, Land and Peace in an engaging and easy-to-perceive way.
Academic Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Graphic and/or Video Design, Communication, Arts, or other relevant degree is required.
Experience: • A minimum of 2 years of proven working experience in creating visual tools, infographic and animations to support organizations with their learning and communication activities is required.
• Working experience with national or international development agencies is an asset.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic will be an advantage.
