Duties and Responsibilities

The Environment Management Group (EMG) is a United Nations (UN) System-wide coordination body on environment and human settlements established in 2001 pursuant to the General Assembly resolution 53/242 in July 1999. The Group is supported by a secretariat provided by UNEP, located in Geneva, Switzerland. The EMG membership consists of the specialized agencies, programmes and organs of the United Nations including the secretariats of the Multilateral Environmental Agreements.

The EMG identifies issues on the international environmental agenda that warrant cooperation, and finds ways of engaging its collective capacity in coherent management responses to those issues. In accordance with its Terms of Reference, the EMG works through technical meetings, Issue Management Groups, Consultative Processes and Task Teams.

The EMG Consultative Process on Advancing Environmental and Social Sustainability in the United Nations System works to i.a. raise awareness and facilitate shared learning to support the application of the Model Approach to Environmental and Social Standards for UN Programming (the Model Approach).

In support of efforts to strengthen more harmonized approaches to environmental and social standards for UN programming, the Knowledge Exchange Platform for Advancing a Model Approach to Environmental and Social Standards for UN Programming was developed to serve as an open forum to share lessons learned, resources, and engage in discussion. The site is intended to foster a "community of practice" of experts working on environmental and social standards within the UN system and key partners.

The EMG Secretariat is seeking a consultant to support the implementation of activities related to the Consultative Process, in particular, to further develop the Knowledge Exchange Platform and to support activities related to outreach, knowledge sharing, and knowledge management associated with the Model Approach.
