Result of Service

The incumbent will give support to the SAICM Secretariat in its main functions. The functions of the secretariat are listed in paragraph 28 of the SAICM Overarching Policy Strategy, as well as in ICCM resolution I/4. These Services will contribute to the achievement of the conference services & reporting tasks and ultimately to the SAICM workplan.

Duties and Responsibilities

--Purpose
During the 2021-2022 work programme cycle for the SAICM Secretariat, conference services and reporting services was supported by a JPO (P2) that moved to another UNEP Secretariat in October 2021. There is the need to support the SAICM secretariat to draft documents drafting and report writing.

--Objectives
•Support the preparation of documents for SAICM meetings, especially Bureau meetings, Regional meetings and IP4 meeting. The dates for these meetings are not yet confirmed.
•Provide support to the SAICM Secretariat in reporting services.
•The incumbent may be requested to support other activities of the SAICM Secretariat.

--Output expectations
•Assistance given to the planning and organization of the SAICM meetings, especially at drafting of meeting documents and reporting.
•Documents drafted or contributed to and organized related to future meetings.
•Input to the documents for SAICM Bureau meetings and regional briefings is provided and uploaded on the SAICM website.

--Performance indicators
•Timely contribution towards documents for the SAICM Bureau meetings.
•Meeting documents and reports posted on the SAICM website within the timelines set and according to the rules of procedure.
•Pre-session meeting documents handled within timelines.

--Specific tasks and responsibilities
•Support meetings and intersessional work of the International Conference on Chemicals Management, as well as regional briefings and other expert meetings, with maximum multi-stakeholder participation, and to disseminate the reports and recommendations of the intersessional process.
•Support the drafting of the reports of the SAICM meetings.
•Perform research on specific topics.
•Support the team in the establishment and maintenance of a network of SAICM stakeholders at the national, regional and international levels, in the case of intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations.
•Support the development and dissemination of guidance materials to support SAICM implementation to stakeholders.
•Assist the team in providing information clearing house services such as provision of advice to countries on SAICM implementation, referral of requests for information to relevant sources, and facilitation of access to information and expertise in support of specific national actions.
•Once cleared by the SAICM Coordinator, ensure that recommendations from the intersessional process are conveyed to relevant global and regional organizations and institutions.
•Assist in the exchange of relevant scientific and technical information.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: University degree in environmental sciences, environmental management, economics or a related field.
Experience: Professional Experience:
--A minimum of two (2) years of experience in report writing and conference servicing and project management support functions is required.
--One (1) year of experience within the United Nations Environment Programme is desirable.
--Demonstrated experience in data entry, data extraction and preparation of standard reports is required.
--Experience in providing secretariat services in the context of an intergovernmental organization is desirable.
--Good command of information technology tools, particularly presentation tools is required.
--Good communication skills are required.

Special skills/knowledge:
--Desired good technical understanding of issues related to environmental and/or sound chemicals management.
--Required planning and organization skills.
--Required good inter-personal and communication skills.
--Required excellent communication skills, including good written command in English and ability to craft and deliver messages in an articulate manner.
--Required ability to work in a multicultural environment.
Language: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
