Result of Service

Under the direct supervision of the Project Management Officer of CounterMEASURE II in the UNEP Asia and the Pacific Office and overall supervision of the Deputy Regional Director of UNEP Asia and the Pacific Office, the consultant is required to:
1. Manage the relationship and deliverables with a contracted company/partner and the virtual event platform manager for the Forum
2. Lead on publicizing the event and on invitations of participants and speakers
3. Provide a detailed workplan for the event preparations, a final concept note, detailed agenda and guidance for participants
4. Ensure all final preparations are in place for the event to take place
5. Provide final external Forum report and an internal Forum report of the event, as well as follow up with speakers and participants

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose:

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s Asia and the Pacific Office geographically serves 41 countries across the region to promote and implement sustainable development solutions. It assists countries of the region pursue sustainability, particularly in their implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development including technical expertise, facilitating access to finance, undertaking cutting-edge science-policy assessments, offering advisory services and strengthening laws, policies, management and governance.

UNEP works with national and local authorities, civil society, other UN organizations, research institutions and the private sector to catalyze the efficient use of the region’s natural assets and reduce the degradation of the environment.

Building on the project “Promotion of Countermeasures Against Marine Plastic Litter in Southeast Asia and India (CounterMEASURE)”, which focused on identification of sources and pathways of major plastic leakage in India and along the Mekong River, the project “Promotion of action against marine plastic litter in Asia and the Pacific (CounterMEASURE II), aims to generate, share and disseminate scientific knowledge on plastic pollution in the Ganges, Mekong and selected rivers in Sri Lanka and other rivers in Asia, to inform policy and decision-making processes at local, national, regional and global level. The second phase also looks at the impact of plastic pollution on wildlife, particularly migratory species and supports policy advocacy on these issues. The project is implemented with the generous support of the Government of Japan and runs from June 2020 until March 2022.

The CounterMEASURE II project brings together a large number of partners across the Asia-Pacific region and globally, both as direct partners implementing the project activities, as well as through outreach and policy work. Throughout the project implementation, a large amount of information and products are being generated, and the work with partners is yielding promising results in the implementation of new policies to reduce plastic waste leakage into rivers in Asia. In order to share the outcomes of the project and discuss the project results with a wide audience of practitioners, academics, policy makers, citizen scientists and others interested in the topic of plastic pollution in rivers in Asia Pacific, a final stakeholder forum will be organized in March 2022.

A consultant is required to plan and lead the organization of the final stakeholder forum in March 2022.

Objective:
As part of the CounterMEASURE II Project Management Unit, the consultant will lead on all aspects of the organization and implementation of the final stakeholder forum of the project.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in business management, communications, event management, environmental sciences, sustainable development, project management or any other discipline that is relevant to the project. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Experience: - A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area.
- Proven experience in the management of large online events with a variety of stakeholders including governments, civil society, private sector.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Diplomacy and experience in communicating with and engaging a diverse audience.
- Knowledge and experience in sustainable consumption and production value chain management, waste management or circular economy is considered an asset
- Experience in the Asia-Pacific region is considered an asset.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
