Duties and Responsibilities

The UNODC Advocacy Section (AS) is responsible for all headquarters-driven communications and outreach and leads the Office’s external communications efforts to raise awareness of drug, crime, and terrorism issues. AS provides strategic advice and services in media outreach, website content development, event management, corporate design, campaigns, celebrity advocacy, partnership opportunities and more, working closely with teams in Vienna and Field Offices to strengthen the UNODC brand. AS uses traditional and new media tools to raise the profile of the Office and promote its activities worldwide.
UNODC works on several key areas in tackling drugs and crime. To carry out the communications work around the UNODC framework for responding to the opioid crisis, AS is seeking the services of a Individual Contractor to assist with several outputs within this specific area.
This covers among other activities: a) drafting and rolling out of a communication and advocacy strategy and campaign b) development and dissemination of public information materials in support of the campaign.

The purpose of this assignment is to support the communications activities of the Advocacy Section around the mandate areas of UNODC in close consultation with the Chief, Laboratory and Scientific Section and the coordinator of the UNODC opioid framework and develop and roll out a communication and advocacy strategy and campaign.

Under the management of the Chief of the Advocacy Section, the Individual Contractor will perform the following tasks:
Substantially contribute to, coordinate and/or guide the production of public information materials, as well as web content, press releases etc. This includes actively reaching out to and liaising with substantive units in UNODC, proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience: A minimum of least two years of experience in communications or public relations.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
