The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies Services and Training to all peacekeeping and special political missions around the world as well as to other UN Offices, Agencies Funds and Programs.
This Internship is located in the Administration & Programme Management Unit (APMU) of the Supply Chain Service at the United Nations Global Service Centre, Brindisi, Italy.
The Intern will report to the relevant Supervisor and will work under the direct supervision of Chief, Administration and Programme Management Unit.
The internship is for a minimum period of three (3) months with an opportunity for extension up to six (6) months, depending on the needs of the Unit and availability of the candidate, with substantial preference being given to candidates who are able to commit to the maximum six-months period. One (1) post is available.
Our interns work as full members of our team, pursue projects that are designed to make a significant difference in UNGSC, and have opportunities to learn about the United Nations overall.
Within delegated authority, the Intern may be responsible for the following duties:
• Gather and analyse data from various databases and sources.
• Perform statistical and/or mathematical programming, develop reports and visual representations.
• Develop and/or maintain databases, and provide consultation, technical assistance, in determining the appropriate statistical methodology to meet the needs and objectives.
• Use various statistical and mathematical software packages to summarize and interpret statistical results.
• Design and implement study activities and process improvements.
• Support team members with data management, data transformation and data cleaning from primary or secondary sources and maintaining databases/data systems.
• Create simple data visualizations for internal or external use independently.
• Translate data results into written reports, or presentations to convey information to management.
• Identify, analyse, and interpret trends or patterns, using basic machine learning techniques, statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured sources of information and data.
• Contribute to identify opportunities to implement innovative approaches and evidence-based reasoning to organizational issues and ensures cleaned data without major quality issues is used for complex analyses.
• Assist to develop and delivery data science solutions to better enable the planning, decision making, and implementation of organization programmes.
• Assist in cataloguing and documenting.
• Prepare and/or review internal files, database and logs.
• Perform calculations for financial reconciliation purposes.
• Assist to prepare internal templates for the creation/revision of service delivery Master Data.
• Support the team members with the drafting and/or revision of Supply Chain agreements with clients.
• Provide other assistance as needed.

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
The field of studies must be closely related to the type of Internship you are applying for: Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, Mathematics, Data Visualization or Analytics or related area.
The Intern is expected to:
• Be computer literate in standard software applications such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPivot, PowerPoint, and analytics tools (e.g., Microsoft SQL, Microsoft Power BI, SAP Business Objects, Tableau, Qlik);
• Have a keen interest in analytics, information management, visualization, and performance optimization;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
• Have knowledge of data management techniques, quantitative analysis and methods is an advantage;
• Have knowledge of data science, data analytics, applied mathematics, information management is an advantage.

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this Internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
NOTE: “Fluency” equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (speak, read, write and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “fluent” in two of the four areas.
