Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose:
Two years on, the Covid-19 pandemic has hindered sustainable development efforts globally and, in the Asia-Pacific region. While the region was not on track to meet the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) prior to the crisis, the pandemic threatens to reverse the development gains that were made in recent years. With less than ten years left to achieve the (SDG’s), there is a need for governments, businesses and civil society to double their efforts and work together. The private sector has an important role to play – not just by helping to finance the SDG’s but also by aligning their operational strategies and increasing their efforts to realize the SDGs and climate commitments. The ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN) brings together businesses that are driving efforts in these directions.

In 2021 ESBN proposed the creation of an “Asia Pacific Green Deal for Business” to rally ESBN members and businesses in the region in support of a green transformation in the region and to identify a pathway to a low-carbon, climate resilient, and sustainable society. The Asia Pacific Green Deal proposes 5 pillars for business action and will actively support local efforts and initiatives across the region in implementing the deal. The Asia Pacific Green Deal is expected to be adopted at the Asia Pacific Business Forum in 2022 and thereafter will be promoted to the business community in the region with the aim of encouraging more businesses to sign up to and implement the Green Deal in their operations.

This consultancy is being initiated to align the ESBN Green Deal for Business with sustainable development efforts and climate action in the region and to intensify private sector engagement through expansion of the ESBN network.
