The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is an international agreement between states. Its aim is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten their survival (www.cites.org). The CITES Secretariat is administered by UN Environment Programme and is located in Geneva.
This assignment is part of the CITES Secretariat’s work under the Outreach and Projects Unit (OPU) and will developing the instructional materials (content) for a completely revised set of online courses, based on the course structure and blueprint that are available. The courses are intended to allow the Parties, including management, scientific and law enforcement authorities, as well as other stakeholders, to have improved access to learning about the requirements of the Convention in a self-paced manner and contribute to the overall capacity-building for CITES Parties.
Under the overall supervision of Chief, Outreach and Projects Unit (OPU), and in close consultation with the other relevant units of the Secretariat, the consultant will:
1. Review the course structure, blueprint and the outline;
2. Design the individual courses and draft the course content using a consistent voice and schedule;
3. Develop exercises, quizzes, videos, games and other tools to improve user engagement;
4. Work with the online course programmer to review and revise the course content; and
5. Create a list of reference materials.
a) Required years of work experience: Minimum 15 years’ experience (Cat. C)
b) Required field of work and where applicable, area of specialty: Minimum 10 years’ experience in training, capacity development or work on CITES. Prior experience with the UN system, in particular working with developing countries, is required. Knowledge of CITES is an asset. Experience with developing and using online training materials is highly desirable. Knowledge of online training software (Articulate, Rise) is an asset. Past experience in teaching and training in CITES related matters is highly desirable. Experience with other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable.
a) Required education qualifications: University degree in law, social or natural science or related area. A lower degree with fifteen years of experience may be accepted.
b) Required knowledge of languages: English, French and Spanish are the working languages of the CITES Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Working knowledge of one of the two other working languages is desirable.
c) Competencies: To successfully undertake this consultancy role the incumbent must demonstrate the competencies of Creativity, Technological awareness, Client Orientation, and Planning and Organizing.
