Result of Service

UNEP FI’s sustainable finance training services are part of its efforts to fulfill the mission of UNEP FI to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations". The primary aim of these services is to raise awareness and to build capacity in sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI Signatories and other financial institutions, as well as relevant stakeholders in governments, NGOs and academia, especially in developing countries and emerging markets.

Delivering and expanding these services will be an integral part of implementing UNEP FI’s work plan under UNEP´s Project 62-P2

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a unique global partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the global financial sector.

UNEP FI works closely with over 450 financial institutions that are Signatories to the UNEP FI Statements, and a range of partners and organizations to develop and promote linkages between the environment, sustainability and financial performance. Through its Working Groups, Regional activities, training programmes and research projects, UNEP FI carries out its mission to identify, promote, and realize the adoption of the best environmental and sustainability practices at all levels of financial institution operations.

UNEP FI’s sustainable finance training services are part of UNEP FI’s effort to carry out the mission to "identify, promote, and realize the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations”. The primary aim of these services is to raise awareness and to build capacity in sustainable finance amongst UNEP FI Signatories and other financial institutions, as well as relevant stakeholders in governments, NGOs and Academia, especially in developing countries and emerging markets. In particular UNEP FI requires a consultant to work on its activities in the Training Department. UNEP FI undertakes the following training:

Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) Training Programme
The ESRA Training Programme seeks to train financial analysts on how to identify, analyses and manage environmental and social risks associated with their clients’ projects in order to integrate E&S risk management in their day-to-day lending and investment processes and decision-making.

Corporate Ecoefficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI) Training Programme
The CEFI Online Course seeks to train representatives of the financial sector on how to make efficient use of the resources involved in the daily internal operations of financial institutions (FIs) and thus reduce their environmental footprint.

Climate Change & the TCFD: Risks & Opportunities for the Banking Industry Training Programme

The aim of the course is to prepare banking organizations as lenders carry out TCFD-responsive assessments & disclosures and is based on the groundbreaking work of the UNEP FI pilot groups on TCFD adoption.


Green, Social & Sustainable Bonds Training Programme
UNEP FI along with various partners join forces to deliver Green, Social & Sustainable Bonds Training Workshops to promote the development of a greener and more inclusive growth in the countries where these have taken place. The workshops are aimed at potential green bond investors, issuers and verifiers/second-party opinion providers.

Sustainable Finance Training Programme
The Sustainable Finance Training Programme seeks to train representatives of the financial sector to understand the linkage between Sustainability, business & finance
The topics include Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Green Products and Services Financing, and Corporate Eco-efficiency.

Sustainable Finance Training Programme for Saving & Credit Cooperatives
The Sustainable Finance Training Programme seeks to train representatives of saving & credit cooperatives to understand the linkage between Sustainability, business & finance
The topics include Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Green Products and Services Financing, and Corporate Eco-efficiency.

Responsible Investment Training Programme
The Responsible Investment Training Programme seeks to train institutional investors
on how to invest in a responsible way. The topics include Positive Impact, Capital Natural risk took, TCFD tool for institutional investors, etc.

Ecosystems & Sustainable Finance Training Programme
Series of training webinars on the strategies and actions that financial institutions can take to accelerate the transition process towards a more sustainable economy, managing more adequately the current risks and barriers, especially considering those related to natural resources and identifying business opportunities through the innovation of financial products and services that they offer to their clients.

Green Hydrogen Financing Training Programme
UNEP FI has been working with its partners to deliver Green Hydrogen Financing Training Webinars to raise awareness of green hydrogen’s potential in the transition to a more sustainable economy among various institutions of the financial system.

Race to Net Zero Awareness-raising Programme
UNEP FI along with its Partners deliver a series of Webinars on “UNEP FI Financial Alliances in the Race to Net Zero” that seek to analyze the characteristics of each alliance in the race, their commitments to address climate change and their main initiatives to achieve these commitments.

UNEP FI currently does not have the expertise in-house to undertake the below mentioned tasks, therefore it requires the assistance of a consultant.

The objective:
UNEP FI’s programme of Training is an integral part of the Initiative’s efforts to fulfil its mission to "identify, promote, and realise the adoption of best environmental and sustainability practice at all levels of financial institution operations". The Initiative needs a consultant to support UNEP FI’s Training Programme in promoting and delivering the online courses and in-person workshops on: Environmental and Social Risk Analysis (ESRA), Corporate Ecoefficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI), Climate Change & the TCFD: Risks & Opportunities for the Banking Industry, Green, Social & Sustainable Bonds, Sustainable Finance, Responsible Investment, Ecosystems & Sustainable Finance and Green Hydrogen Financing.

The consultant will also assist in updating and scaling up the existing training programme.

Capacity building/Course development/translation:

• Coordinate the translation of the ESRA Online Course materials from English into Spanish, French & Chinese.
• Support with the process to set up the Responsible Banking Academy.
• Support with the development of the report on "Sustainable financial instruments: a comparison between Latin America and Spain", a product by UNEP FI, CAF, the Spanish Banking Association & SITAWI.

Specific tasks and responsibilities:

The incumbent will be responsible for the following:

• Coordinate Environmental & Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) Online Courses.
• Coordinate Climate Change and the TCFD: Risks and Opportunities for the Banking Industry Online Course.
• Coordinate Corporate Eco-Efficiency in Financial Institutions (CEFI) Online Courses.
• Coordinate Environmental & Social Risk Analysis (ESRA) online training workshops for Suriname/Barbados.
• Coordinate Climate Change and the TCFD: Risks and Opportunities for the Banking Industry online training workshops for Suriname/Barbados.
• Coordinate training webinars with COLAC for credit & saving cooperatives of Panama.
• Coordinate conference on Biodiversity Loss and Ecosystem Degradation: Implications for Macroeconomics and Financial
Stability” for Chile and other countries
• Coordinate training workshop on Blue Economy: risks and opportunities in Suriname.
• Coordinate training workshop on financial mechanisms to finance SDGs in Barbados.
• Coordinate training workshop on Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy training webinars in LAC.
• Coordinate the organization of series training on Green, Social and Sustainable Bonds in Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and Panama.

Capacity building/Course development/translation:

• Coordinate the translation of the updated ESRA Online Course materials from English to Spanish, French & Chinese.
• Support with the process to set up the Responsible Banking Academy.
• Support with the development of the report on "Sustainable financial instruments: A comparison between Latin America and Spain", a product by UNEP FI, CAF, the Spanish Banking Association & SITAWI.

The consultant shall be under the overall supervision of Head UNEP FI and report directly to Signatory Relations Programme Officer UNEP FI.

Qualifications/special skills

Skills & knowledge – Proven knowledge in the fields of sustainable finance and the environment; knowledge of and experience in Training; ability to cope with and manage multiple projects and activities in an organised and timely manner; proven conceptual, analytical and evaluative skills; knowledge of and experience in administrative and research issues, strong organizational skills & attention to details, ability to work with extended and remote teams, and excellent communication (spoken and written) skills.

Academic Qualifications: Postgraduate degree in economics, finance, environmental studies, training or business administration.

Experience: At least 5 years of relevant experience in environmental project/programme development, project administration, sustainable development, training, or related field is required. Experience in sustainable finance and marketing/promotion is also required. Knowledge and work experience at the international level in particular with the UN system is an asset.

Language: English is the working language of the Secretariat. For this position, French and Spanish are also required.
