Duties and Responsibilities

UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Ecosystem Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

UNEP initiated a new Land Use Finance Programme – under the Climate Finance Unit - to proactively help unlock and (re)direct public and private capital towards sustainable land use, including deforestation-free soft commodity production. Given the growing portfolio of projects and finance facilities – and the related need for expertise in analyzing sustainable business models in the land-use space – there is a need for a Sustainable Land Use Business Specialist to help finalize a business case report on the development opportunity of a timber value chain associated with cocoa agroforestry models in Ivory Coast.

The preliminary research (scoping study, data collection) has already been undertaken, findings need to be formulated in a short report of maximum 30 pages.

The consultant will work directly with various team members in the Climate Finance Unit team, and report to the Unit’s Business Analytics team Lead and the Head of the Climate Finance Unit.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Under the technical supervision of the CFU’s Business Analytics team Lead and the overall guidance of the Head of the Climate Finance Unit, the consultant will:

• Finalize the report (by 30 June 2022), with a focus on outlining the business case and financial viability of different models of sustainable timber supply chains in Ivory Coast and their application in the context of the country’s sustainable cocoa agroforestry efforts. The report shall propose different financial models to catalyze the adoption of sustainable soy production practices;

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: The consultant should have a Masters’ Degree in environmental science, environmental economics or another relevant scientific background.
Experience: Seven (7) years of professional experience working in the field of sustainable finance and sustainable development is required.

S/he should have excellent writing skills combined with experience in developing qualitative and quantitative analytical models in the field of sustainable finance and sustainable development. Knowledge of the timber, cocoa sectors as well as exposure to the Ivorian context will be considered a plus.
Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consulting position, fluency in oral and written English and French is required.
