Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean in Santiago. The Reviser reports to Chief of the English Unit of the Documents and Publications Division.

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Reviser will be responsible for the following duties:

• Revises translations and original summary records dealing with a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations.
• Translates, almost always without revision, texts covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations and the Commission, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency.
• Edits and revises editing of texts prepared in English covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations and the Commission, particularly those subjects requiring experience and recognized proficiency.
• Drafts, mostly without revision, summary records and serves as monitor of précis-writing teams.
• Develops new terminology for use where none exists in the target language.
• Carries out linguistic research and prepares terminological bulletins and glossaries, technical vocabularies and related reference tools.
• Counsels and assists translators/précis-writers and briefs them on the procedures and practices of the Unit, terminology and a broad range of subjects, as required.
• Participates in the setting of terminology standards.
• Performs other related duties as required.
• Assists and stands in for the Chief of Unit when required.

Knowledge of a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, i.e., political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific and technical, including in the context of Latin America and the Caribbean. Ability to use all sources of references, consultation and information relevant to text at hand. Ability to work under pressure and maintain adequate speed and volume of output. Ability to show a high level of versatility, judgement and discretion. Education

A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

Candidates for this position must have passed the relevant combined United Nations Language Competitive Examination for English Translators/Précis-writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers/Proofreaders/Production Editors or a relevant United Nations language competitive examination held before 2017 (Required)

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in translation, précis-writing, self-revision and use of relevant computer software, electronic tools and databases, of which three preferably should have been in the United Nations is required.

A minimum of two years of experience in revision of translation, preferably in the United Nations, is required.

Proven experience in translating and revising mid-level technical texts in the fields of economics, finance and social affairs is required.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Spanish is a working language of ECLAC. For the position advertised, fluency in English, which must be the candidate's main language, is required; and fluency Spanish is required as tested by the United Nations competitive examination for English translators, is required. Knowledge of Portuguese is desirable.

NOTE: ‘Fluency’’ equals a rating of ‘’fluent’’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and ‘’knowledge’’ equals a rating of ‘’confident’’ or “fluent’ in two of the four areas.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
