Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located within the Information Analysis Team (IAT), Office of the Chief of Staff, at the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), in Nairobi. Nairobi is classified in the "B" category and is a family duty station. The IAT is responsible for the management and processing (collection, collation, analysis and dissemination) of information and analysis as a basis for policy development, enhanced planning and decision-making by the Senior Mission Leadership. The Information Analyst reports through the Deputy Chief of the Integrated Analysis Team to the Chief IAT/Senior Information Analyst.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, the incumbent will be responsible for, but not limited to, the performance of the following duties:

Maintain a clear understanding of developments/events relevant for the implementation of the Mission mandate through the monitoring and collection of data/information from multiple sources, including UN Mission civilian, military and police components, the UN Country Team (UNCT), national civilian/military authorities, NGOs, media and other key stakeholders, for the identification of trends, production of forecasts and assessments.
Produce accurate and timely IAT analytical products and briefings, in coordination and/or consultation with other Mission components and sources. Assist in the development and coordination of IAT tools, such as Information Requirements, in consultation with all relevant information collection components of the Mission.
Maintain a system for classifying and storing confidential information by using IAT information management processes and systems, in consultation with information management/technology expertise.
Contribute to effective working relationships within IAT and other UN Mission components, the UNCT and relevant external actors and organizations.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social sciences, international relations, law, economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in intelligence or information analysis, political science, international relations, journalism, security (military or police) or related field is required.

Experience in a UN field mission (or similar) is desirable.

Experience in political and security analysis related to the Horn of Africa is required.

Experience working on terrorism/extremism related issues is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in Arabic is desirable.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice

• This position is temporarily available until 31 January 2023. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

• While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

• Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

• This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

• Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.Submitting an application or selection for the current temporary job opening does not delay or increase the mandatory age of separation.

Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
