The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Economy Division works with international governments and non-governmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements.
The UNEP Medium Term Strategy (MTS) 2022-2025 identifies unsustainable consumption and production as the underlying cause of the current three planetary crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The MTS aims at addressing those existential threats by working towards climate stability, living in harmony with nature and towards a pollution-free planet. These three strategic pillars will require policies, partnerships and investments in Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) to be secured, based on life cycle thinking, circular economy, sustainable business practices, greening value chains, sustainable finance, data, scientific analysis and reliable consumer information. UNEP aims at making all UNEP staff SCP ambassadors and at equipping programme staff to embed SCP and circular economy (CE) into their programmatic design, through development and roll-out of an online SCP and CE Academy. Two online modules are initially developed, and there is a need to include concrete examples from the electronics sector to demonstration how SCP and CE can be applied in the high-impact sectors such as electronics.
UNEP is also implementing a project entitled “Circular Economy approaches for the electronics sector in Nigeria” (2019-2022), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This GEF project aims to stimulate the development and operation of a financially self-sustaining circular economy approach for electronics products in Nigeria, including the treatment and management of e-waste. The project is implemented by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency in Nigeria (NESREA) with the support from UNEP. The project is coming to a conclusion in 2022, and there is a need to develop a set of communication materials to introduce the learning of the project.
The focus of the consultancy is to support the improvement of the SCP and CE Academy, by including the work of electronics into the script and production. The consultant will also support the development of communication materials for the project ‘Circular Economy approaches for the electronics sector in Nigeria’, funded by the Global Environment Facility. In addition, The consultant will support the development communication materials for Circular & Fair ICT Pact (CFIT) on sustainable procurement of ICT products. The consultant will also prepare communication materials related to the portfolio of SCP, CE and value chain, managed by the Consumption and Production Unit.
The consultant will work home based and full time, under the supervision of the programme officer coordinating the Sustainable Consumption and Production and Circular Economy work of the Consumption and Production unit in Economy Division.
