Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Advocacy and Outreach Unit within the Office of the High Representative for the Most Vulnerable States (Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing
States). The Public Information Officer will report to the senior Public Information Officer under the overall guidance of the Director of the Office. For more information see: https://www.un.org/ohrlls

Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
• Ensures implementation of communications projects and campaigns to publicize priority issues and/or thematic priorities and events on issues of concern to the most vulnerable member states of the United Nations: Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
• Monitors and analyzes current events, press coverage and social media conversations, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses.
• Undertakes activities to promote media coverage (e.g. press conferences, interviews, press seminars and other special activities) of priority issues and/or major events, to include development of media strategies and action plans, and initiating pro-active media outreach efforts; proposing and arranging press conferences/media coverage, disseminating materials and consulting with press on approach/story angle and other information requests, undertaking appropriate follow-up action and analyzing and reporting on the impact of coverage.
• Conceptualizes and develops several diverse design projects in collaboration with teams, based on in-depth analysis of the issues to communicate; delivers full project management cycle of these design projects from conception through layout and printing/online publishing; Produces or oversees production of a specific type or types (e.g. print, broadcast, etc.) of information communications products (e.g. opeds, press releases, feature articles, speeches, booklets, brochures, backgrounders, audio-visual materials, podcasts, etc.), to include proposing topics, undertaking research, determining appropriate medium and target audience, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution.
• Drafts statements/speeches to be delivered by the High Representative and other senior colleagues, prepares compelling and persuasive written materials, including op-eds, press releases, fact sheets and web stories. Provides editorial guidance and support to all colleagues on written products.
• Maintain social media content and coverage, assisting with the coordination of social media campaigns, daily updates and staying up to date with content and other developments in this field.
• Initiates and sustains professional relationships with key constituencies alongside networks and partnerships for innovative campaigns and online projects that engage new constituencies (such as youth, tech, journalists, etc.) into the causes of the most vulnerable states.
• Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc.
• Participates in selecting the information transmitted to key constituencies.
• Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.

Experience with maintaining and editing content of websites or social media accounts or digital photographs is desirable.

Media experience covering the sustainable development challenges of the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing states is desirable.

Experience working in an international media environment is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Assessment

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

United Nations Considerations
