Cadre organisationnel

This position is located at the Plumbing Shop, Mechanical Unit (MU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

The incumbent is supervised by the Foreperson of the Shop and reports to the General Foreperson of the Unit.

Responsabilités

Under the supervision of the Foreperson of the Plumbing Shop, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

- Conduct maintenance of old and installation of new plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems throughout United Nations (UN) facilities;

- Conduct plumbing service and maintenance for all water, waste and vent pipe systems;

- Heat (involves high pressure steam), service and replace steam mains and returns;

- Service high pressure (up to 200 lbs) steam regulating equipment;

- Conduct inspections of plumbing and heating system, periodic overhauling of all valves from 1/4 inches up to 8 inches and make necessary repairs with the installation of new parts;

- Replace old defective pipes, periodic cleaning out and overhaul of hot water tanks, sewer ejectors, oil separators, neutralizing tanks and sump pits and general maintenance on all plumbing supplies and fixtures in the UN Complex;

- Review blue-prints and specifications to determine the layout for plumbing and related materials;

- Record all time and materials on job related work orders;

- Set up manual and electric drills, saws and pipe machines in order to perform duties;

- Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Foreperson, General Foreperson and the Chief of the Section.

Formation

High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.

Job - Specific Qualification

A NYS Backflow Certification or equivalent is required.

A Master's Plumbers License is desirable.

A certificate in OSHA Construction Safety is desirable.

Expérience professionnelle

A minimum of five years of experience in the plumbing trade is required.

Experience in the use of hand power tools and equipment related to the trade is required.

Experience working in a commercial or institutional environment is desirable.

Experience in servicing or replacing high pressure steam for plumbing/heating systems is desirable.

Experience in processing work orders through an automated Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system is desirable.

Experience in the maintenance and repair of automatic sprinkler system is desirable.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year.

The selected candidate will be required to perform night shifts on rotation, in order to perform required off-peak maintenance work as well as to provide prompt response in case of emergencies.

Passing the Trades and Crafts Test (TCT) is a prerequisite for selection in the Trades and Crafts category in the United Nations Secretariat.
