Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

This position is located in UN Environment, Corporate Services Division, Enterprise Solutions Section in Nairobi. The incumbent will be reporting to an Officer in Enterprise Solutions Section.

Enterprise Solutions Section is mandated to enable efficient programme delivery through the use of cutting edge knowledge management and information technology solutions, including emerging solutions for both corporate and environmental challenges. It undertakes a wide range of services, activities and projects. It works closely with clients throughout the project life cycle to tailor the services to their needs ensuring that the solution meets the required objectives from a specification, resource and time perspective. The Section is currently involved in the strategy, planning and implementation of the UNEP Digital Transformation Sub-programme. ESS is looking for young, innovative, solutions-driven individuals to join the multicultural and dynamic team in ESS as interns to further implement the solutions.

The Internship is is for 3 to 6 months, and is UNPAID.
Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.

Responsibilities

• Under supervision, assist in specification, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of computer application systems as per client’s requests.
• Provide assistance in improving the functionality and content of existing computer applications.
• Provide assistance in Office 365 projects (e.g. Microsoft Teams, PowerApps, Microsoft Flow);
• Undertake various research as directed by the Supervisor by collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
• Provide user support for computer applications.
•Perform other duties as directed by the Supervisor.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
c. have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
d. Be skilled in using computer programming languages and good knowledge of databases.
e. Preferred area of study: Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology or related field.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position(s) advertised, fluency in English is required.
