Cadre organisationnel

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the United Nations headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. We support programme implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other United Nations offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). This post is located in Facilities Management and Transportation Section (FMTS), Central Support Services, Division of Administrative Services, UNON. This position reports to the Chief, Facilities Management & Transportation Section. Within delegated authority, the Environmental/ Sustainability Engineer will be responsible for the provision of technical expertise and best practice across all section services related to environmental sustainability including planning, oversight, management, and coordination of section engineering related infrastructure engineering related infrastructure construction, operations, maintenance and environmental sustainability activities, at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), and as such apply professional engineering knowledge and expertise in performance of the following duties:

Responsabilités

• Inputs into section multi-year plans and budgeting activities, for amongst others, environmental upgrades, and improvement projects, with a specific focus on utilities such as power, water, wastewater, and waste services, including increased implementation of renewable technologies and energy production capacities.
• Actively collaborates and provides specialist technical expertise to multi-disciplinary teams across the section/ service to implement environmental sustainability and best practice throughout UNON’s facilities and operations, including research to support development of new innovative technical and environmental solutions, preparing feasibility studies, design proposals including energy modeling, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for construction projects, which support continual environmental improvements with a specific focus on the built environment, energy, water, wastewater and waste services, and transport sector.
• Applies commonly used engineering calculations, practices and precedents in completing portions of larger projects related to the design, construction, or repair of buildings, waste disposal systems, water treatment facilities, electrical power generation and distribution systems, environmental control systems, and other related structures and activities.
• Develops, and or oversees section/ service technical staff, to develop technical data including plans, designs and specifications for projects, construction and related documents, such as bills of quantities and drawings sufficient for tender out of construction works.
• Conducts preliminary site investigations to obtain field data such as soil characteristics, drainage and other data required for building site selection.
• Develops technical data regarding materials, sizes, dimensions, and quantities and costs to be incorporated in formal specifications.
• Estimates costs of resource efficient retrofits of existing buildings, facilities, and systems to determine feasibility of new infrastructure and construction works, retrofits and or replacement projects.
• Produces cost data and estimates on engineering-related requirements of current and planned projects. Analyzes project proposals to ensure technical feasibility and to ensure that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources.
• Liaises, coordinates and provides management oversight and technical guidance to other section engineers and facilities specialists responsible for related works phases to arrive at mutually satisfactory approaches to problems.
• Conducts investigations to develop improved designs and construction techniques. Conducts research on development of new technical systems and follow development to identify improved methods and equipment.
• Formulates and ensures inclusion of environmental procedures, standards and guidelines into the program of work for all construction and maintenance works carried out at the UNON complex, including concepts, designs, feasibility studies and upgrade, improvement and life cycle replacement plans for utilities related infrastructure and operations.
• Provides professional guidance for and supports achievement of section environmental strategies and implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting on section environmental targets and associated projects on annual basis in line with UNON’s environmental policy, environmental management system (EMS), the requirements for ISO 14001:2015, and commitments of UN related sustainability strategies.
• Coordinates implementation and manages all activities related to UNON’s environmental management system (EMS), related external ISO 14001 certification and oversees the ongoing collection, compilation, evaluation and distribution of facilities related emissions data and statistics to entities at the UN Gigiri premises, and the compilation and reporting of UNON’s environmental performance through www.greeningtheblue.org on annual basis.
• Acts as advocate for environmental sustainability, participates in inter-agency environmental sustainability working groups to support common environmental targets and objectives. Coordinates outreach activities in support of UNON’s infrastructure and operations related sustainability strategies and targets.
• Supports, trains and builds capacities of section/ service staff in environmental sustainability efforts. Develops communication plans for environmental outreach, including preparation of communication outreach materials and carrying out environmental awareness training. Participates in technical committees to evaluate project proposals to ensure functional and operational feasibility.
• Prepares reports for management on progress and matters of a technical nature.
• Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
• Performs other related tasks as assigned.

Formation

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental sustainability, electrical and mechanical engineering, or another similar field, is required. A first level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Additional certification in sustainable energy engineering and or a renewable energy related field is desirable. Formal training in EMS and or ISO 14001:2015 is desirable.

Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an desirable.

Expérience professionnelle

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental engineering, environmental management, environmental sustainability, electrical and mechanical engineering, or related field, is required.

Practical experience working as the principal responsible for planning, implementation, and delivery of environmental sustainability, infrastructure or engineering projects with a specific focus on the built environment, energy, water, wastewater and waste services, and transport sector is required.

Practical experience working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide technical expertise, best practice and deliver on environmental building or engineering solutions, is required.

Proficiency in use of REVIT, AutoCAD, or similar software is required.

Experience with planning, coordination, and implementation of an EMS and certification of the same according to international standards such as ISO 14001:2015, is desirable.

Practical experience with an environmentally certified building, or environmental performance assessment and rating tools, is desirable.

Experience in an international environment working on environmental outreach, is desirable.

2 years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Connaissances linguistiques

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in written and oral English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

NOTE: "Fluency equals a rating of "fluent" in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and " Knowledge of" equals a rating of' confident" in two of the four areas.
